Highest Quality Technical Guidance

By way of background, I am a long time CFA charter holder. I have also participated in a wide range of volunteer activities for the CFA Institute including grading CFA exams for 10 years, participating in standard setting activities, participating in efforts to confirm the CFA Global Body of Knowledge and Candidate Body of Knowledge and proofread new chapters or updates of existing chapters of CFA texts. I also wrote a chapter, which is included in a text published by the CFA Institute.
My comments and review are focused on the technical quality of the CFA program materials - I noted a few very negative reviews noting that the materials hadn't changed since the prior year or the print quality was poor. On the issue of materials not changing, that is more a function of changes in factors external to the CFA Institute (changes in the capital markets, development of new financial instruments, changes in accounting requirements, laws and other factors). I would not expect material changes in the CFA candidate materials to be necessary absent these types of external changes.
CFA materials are developed with a comprehensive process to insure: 1) the technical accuracy of materials 2) the relevance of materials to CFA candidates globally - avoidance of materials that are either overly technical as a result of the technical expertise of the writer or written at too low of a level to insure an appropriate level of knowledge 3) the ease of use by individuals globally by presenting diverse examples and using accessible language that avoids jargon or country specific examples that might not be understood by all readers.
The process for writing the chapter that I authored was comprehensive and is informative of the quality of these materials. The effort included the in-depth participation by a full time CFA Institute editor with extremely deep investment, finance, education and communication knowledge. The draft document was reviewed by numerous subject matter experts in my field for technical accuracy. The draft was also reviewed by numerous CFA charter holders across the world with difference career focuses to insure the relevance and readability of the document. The editor was deeply involved in helping assess every possible change to each draft developed. The process was exceptionally time consuming work - every word of a 50 page chapter was considered many times to insure a quality document. (I have been involved providing comments on documents published by other publishing firms and my sense is that their processes cannot compare with the focus and execution that CFA Institute brings to their publications.)
If you read the description of the CFA materials and they seem to be a match to your needs and interests, the CFA Program Curriculum would be a worthy investment.

2016 Edition is Identical and Cheaper!

The books are identical to 2016 edition except a 10-page section. Why sell for $300 when 2016 edition just costs $180 on Amazon? I thought CFA Institute is a non-profit organization? But increasingly, it looks like a greedy merchant to me!
I would strongly suggest candidates to use earlier editions, or simply share books with your friends, instead of being ripped off.
