I was very disappointed to find that it is not spiral-bound like earlier ...

I received my copy of this book in the 80's… Mom mom had hers from the 60's, and Grandma had one, too. My spriral-bound treasure was starting to fall apart from years of use, so I was excited to see this reprint. Upon its arrival, I was very disappointed to find that it is not spiral-bound like earlier editions. I would have taken it to be rebound if only the centre margin was left wide enough for a binding. *sigh* I dragged out my tried-and-true copy, the one with the pages falling out, and started using it again.

I am disappointed because the recipes are not all identical to the ...

I am disappointed because the recipes are not all identical to the ones in my older edition. The pages are also smaller and there are no colour photographs that add personality to the book. It is also missing the wire ring binding that my older edition had. It cannot lay flat on the table and this makes it difficult to read and follow recipes while cooking.

I HAD ONE OF THESE COOK BOOKS THAT MY NANNY GAVE ME WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER AND IT HAS BEEN SO WORN OUT AND PAGES FALLING OFF AND I HAVE HAD A WAR WITH MY DAUGHTERS TRYING TO KEEP IT IN MY HOUSE. LOL WELL I GOT IT BACK AND FOUND NEW ONE'S SO I CAN GIVE THEM BOTH ONE OF THERE VERY OWN. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THIS COOK BOOK FOR YEARS AND HERE IT IS SO GREAT TO FIND IT. THIS IS SO WELL WORTH IT AND THE SMALL TIME I HAD TO WAIT FOR IT. I LOVE THIS BOOK AND YOU WOULD TO IF YOU LOVE TO COOK OR BAKE THINGS ... SO MANY GREAT RECEIPIES SUCH AS THE BANANA NUT LOAF YOU WILL LOVE IT.

But that's about it, nothing special or different. Just a normal routine guy.

You would not be able to see that I have been through a war. You could not tell I have been through times where every moment felt like a battlefield, heck was a battlefield or maybe a babble-filled with arguments strewn all over and a life that made about as much sense and was as coherent as a land fill site or a toxic waste dump. There is no way to tell that I have walked through frustration littered days with minefields of argument and breathed anger and angst filled air day after day.

But I have. That has been my life. It may be yours. It is probable that whatever situation you may be faced with right now, the likelihood of it having been as messed up, as fragmented, as frustrating, as outright demented and up chuck inducing as my reality the past eight years or so, is highly unlikely. Not impossible, of course, for clearly there exist situations that are messier and more frustrating and more perverted in circumstance than my own, but unlikely. I say that not to be dramatic but simply because it is true. The likelihood of a repeat of the circumstances I have been facing and have faced, in any life, is extremely small.

For I have lived with, loved, been married to, a narcissist, for eight years. It took me a while to figure it out, but I have learned that there are some simple ways of handling things, some simple strategies, techniques, and methods that will allow you to keep your sanity and move forward with your life and goals in a loving and happy manner, even though you may be stuck in a very difficult relationship with a person who has narcissistic personality disorder: with a narcissist.

This is a simple, straightforward, book that just tells you what you need to know about narcissism; how to deal with it in a manner that will keep you healthy, loving and strong; able to make the relationship decisions you need to make to have a fulfilling and love filled, happy life. This is a road map through the challenges that will be helpful to anybody who has ever had to deal with a self-involved or narcissistic individual on any level.

Whatever level you are at in dealing with the issues surrounding a narcissistic individual or individuals, let me walk with you and show you the way to get through the challenges in a healthy and life affirming way without blame or anger.

Thorough, helpful, and knowledgeable book

When I first bought this book I had the idea that it would give me some insight into NPD or narcissist personality disorder. It did that, but it also did much more. The writer speaks from the point of view of having survived a relationship with a person who has NPD, and, though he does not state as much, it seems that it may have been written just after the relationship ended in divorce. I say this because divorce is mentioned very early on in the book. This gives the book a sense of urgency and an authenticity which only adds value to the very recently gained insights it contains.

It is set up and organized as an action plan to take the reader through getting past the challenges in their relationship in a step by step manner. This is very useful for those in a challenging relationship as the writer is using his own proven effective step by step system to deal with a very personal and difficult challenge. This book would be a terrific and valuable read not only for those dealing with a self absorbed partner, but also for anybody looking at how to be more effective in working with those who seem to lack empathy or are overly concerned with themselves.

Reading this book made me realize and better understand that this type of difficulty, that of being overly self-absorbed, is often something that the person in question cannot really control and that it 'gets away from them', in a manner of of speaking. I now can think more open mindedly and fairly about the challenges faced by those afflicted with NPD, and realize this is a far more common disorder than I had originally thought.

The only real weakness is the lack of clinical data, and medical research, but since these are available readily on the Internet or from other written sources this is not critical.

This is a very valuable book that achieves its purpose of showing a positive and creative process for resolving what can be a very sticky and difficult relationship situation. I would highly recommend it to anybody facing the challenge of being with a narcissist, or anybody who has a friend in a like situation. It is also quite helpful in learning about the topic.

Love is a battlefield, but you can win the war with the narcissist in your life.

I can tell that this book was written by a psychologist as opposed to the usual "you're OK, I'm OK, we're all OK" quacks one often sees. Narcissists are quite challenging because on one hand they have an inflated sense of self-worth and on the other hand, they can be very needy and very dependent on praise and affection, even when they don't deserve it. This book won't cure their narcissism but it might help your partner be more aware of the things he or she does, and it will give you strategies when it comes to fighting his tricks. For example, instead of getting mad and going in circles, you might respond an accusation like "yeah, I'm guilty of everything" with "is it possible you are trying to make me feel guilty hoping that we can maybe do it the way you want." Because as the author says, the narcissist is incapable of taking the long view and seeing the consequences because his view is myopic. Therefore, it is your duty to help him or her see things for what they are and not for what he thinks they should be. You will learn to respond instead of reacting, to take time off for yourself, and to save a relationship that chances are is worth saving. In fact, if you think dating a narcissist is bad, try dating one of those insecure Debbie downers that always feels bad, always feels depressed, rarely feels happy even when good things happen to her. In fact, maybe our attraction to narcissists comes from their initial self-confidence, even if it's a mask for other feelings, it can be a very convincing mask at times. Overall, I like the common-sense and easy to understand advice in this book. Oh, and for those who say "why can't I date someone normal," I have news for you, normal does not exist.

I'll be honest, I did not understand narcissism before reading this book. I just thought it was an easy cop-out to be a selfish, self-absorbed individual.

Dr. Goodman opened my eyes. In this easy to read, no doctor talk book, Dr. Goodman covered the basics and then some. Speaking from personal experience Dr. Goodman knows first hand about dealing with a narcissistic loved one. I applaud Dr. Goodman for speaking out and helping others in a similar situation.

A very thorough book that easily explains narcissism and how to survive - or as you'll soon realize, not survive but really love and enjoy life.

Loving a narcissist is difficult, whether it's a spouse, a parent a child, or a friend, this book is filled with practical solutions and tips for helping you not just deal with a bad situation, but with advice on how to really make the most out of life.

so educatioal and socially relevant

Lawson proves that his approach is "no nonsense" and that he is not trying just to sell you his book over another book on the subject. He details history and approaches to weaving a story and plot and challenges the writer to create character actions that are not able to be questioned as to why those actions were taken. His approach to presenting the social necessity prompting actions that change the lives not only of characters but the world around them is quite informative. Learning that the obligatory scene is not the climax and that what authors choose for the climax usually is not supported by adequate causes for such actions taken is priceless for a developing writer.
I continue to read the book over and over again and always get new insights into the craft of playwriting.

required reading for playwrights and screenwriters

I've never understood why this book isn't more well-known. Lawson was a gifted dramatist, and his Theory and Technique of Playwriting contains a great deal of invaluable, detailed nuts-and-bolts information about the craft that screenwriters and playwrights won't find anywhere else. It may not be a breezy read, but it's every bit as worthwhile as titles by Egri, Field, and others.

Van der Rohe, father of the glass and steel modernist skyscraper, affected his field more dramatically than most of his contemporaries. From his earliest years as an apprentice architect in Germany in the first decade of the 20th century, van der Rohe pursued a clear set of ideals about the nature of building. Peter Carter, a student of and later staff architect for van der Rohe, guides readers through his mentor's commitment to structure as the determining factor of form and architecture as an illustration of its civilization. It may seem old hat to today's readers that form follows function, but the notion was very avant-garde during the middle of the century, when van der Rohe was at his height. This copiously illustrated survey of all the major buildings and projects on 192 pages measuring 11.50 x 9.88 inches includes 31 listed projects, several chapters illustrated with additional projects, 400 B&W illustrations, mostly photos, but also technical ones (plans, sections, details, elevations, etc.), 33 pages with educational notes, biographical chronology, etc. A few photos are too big, i.e. do not have enough content for their size, and a few details are too small, simply not legible enough, and inferior to those included in the bilingual "Mies Van der Rohe (Studio Paperback)" by Werner Blaser published under ISBN: 3764356197, though in a smaller format, but with some illustrations more legible.

The Definitive Technical Analysis of Mies's Architecture

Peter Carter, who studied under Mies at IIT, wrote this book in the early 70s, shortly after Mies died. It's been long out of print, and I paid dearly to get a copy of the original version, shortly before this rerelease was announced. A lot has happened in architecture since it was written and yet Mies's best work still shines as brightly. For anyone with an interest in Mies in particular, or modern architecture in general, whether as a professional or layman, this is a must-have book.

'Painting Realistic Wildlife...' contains beautiful artistry and very clear, detailed step-by-step techniques that are sure to help both aspiring art students and the accomplished artisan alike. I am currently an art student, and I wish I would have had this book with me when I was taking my traditional painting courses. I have gained more from this book than I have in all of my painting classes combined. This book shows better techniques for fleshing in and blocking in painting compositions, and it helps to achieve photorealistic details with the more difficult elements like fur, textured skin and scales. William Silvers has done a fantastic job sharing his talent and techniques with the world!

Another good story

I like this idea of the story and I loved the way the men were so patient with Lily, I do believe the author focused on trying to go to slow that when the ending came it was rushed to catch up with what had happened between the two. Still a great story and wonderful characters

Pretty good for what it is (/how much it cost), but not what I hoped it would be. And not nearly what it COULD be.

Would be good as a reference for possible classical problem solutions, but only so far as identifying potential options. I was hoping to get a more technical manual with more of the details about how mechanisms worked. Instead, you get a HUGE compilation of mechanisms, with the majority being exceedingly under-explained, with extremely intricate mechanisms scaled down so small as to be nearly impossible to decipher by intuition, even for the technical minded.

Also, author/editor seems to have a very bad habit of repeating near identical mechanisms with very slight variations, and not even in series! If you had each variation next to each other, it would actually be helpful. Instead they are all scattered about, and their individual differences are largely obscured. Instead of being thorough, it just appears to be sloppy editing.

Could be great if it were MUCH more detailed in descriptions and the schematics were bigger. I guess for the money, i got more than I should have expected. But I would much rather have paid 2-3x more for a legitimate, well explained version of all the content that the author attempts to shoe-horn here.

A historic gem on 1900s engineering that has been butchered.

This is a poor reproduction of a facinating 1921 engineering book. If you are interested in steam engineering, or are a steam punk fan, or want to know about the latter years of sailing mechanics, then you'll enjoy this book. The clockwork section is also interesting to people facinated by clocks.

The problem is that almost all the technology discussed no longer exists. Modern steam is very different, modern sailing bears absolutely no relationship to the hemp knots, wood sheaves and lug sails shown. Clockwork is a historic novelty these days.

The original, in 1921 must have been a gem but it is apparent that compiling and publishing this edition was a quick and dirty excercise to make a quick buck. Sections are in the wrong place, parts of chapters have become misplaces and some diagrams have the wrong captions. The OCR software to convert the text into PDF format was poor and the authors (unnamed) didn't even bother to read through the text and correct the glaringly obvious mistakes.

As an insight into the state of engineering in the early 1900s, the book is interesting. As an inspiration for modern engineering, you may well be wasting your time.

I keep buying this book. I keep it at my desk and give it away every year or so to young engineers anxious to reinvent mechanical solutions. Here is fodder for the seeking mind.

I've consulted these old designs for over 50 years to consider solutions. The trained eye, personal experience and the need to bring solve mechanical problems make these old books relevant. Some solutions are elegant, some are fraught with inefficiency that make them their own sort of application curious, all of the designs have worked for their purpose to make the collection.

The visual enjoyment and puzzle aspect to visualize just how these solutions work make them fun. No need to reinvent the variable transverse drive.

About the Author
Dr. Anthony E. Schwaller has been working in the field of automotive technology and teaching about technology for 35 years. During his teaching career he received the "Distinguished Technology Educator Award" in 1990, the "Special Recognition Award" from ITEA in 1995, and was selected as the Technology Teacher Educator of the Year" in 1997 fro the Council for Technology Teacher Education. He also received the "Outstanding Research Award" in 2003 for his research on Modular Technology in the classroom. During his teaching career, he as worked for Allis Chalmers, General Motors, Eastern Illinois University, and St. Cloud State University where he is now professor and department head. He has written over 50 articles in professional journals, written ten textbook in the automotive technology and related fields, and has given more than 50 presentations on topics in the fields of automotive, transportation, energy technology, and instructional strategies.

This textbook was intact, meaning no missing pages whatsoever! The description of the textbook was accurate, which caused it to be worthy. This book is very handy when studying about the basics of automobiles.

A must to develop confidence to pass ASE the first time

This book alone can't pass ASE. But if you use it with test question oriented review book on the Market... no problems
Salute to the author no because he's a PHh. D. but he's making sure the book is published the way he wants it. (dedicated and determined to get the points across the readers) and bring home something. read on....

So why you should have this book with you when you are prepared for the ASE?
1. The diagrams . every diagrams , well!! Almost 99.9% diagrams in the book have more than one `captions' (short phrases that explain/indicate parts of the whole) inside the pictures. Name me a textbook that bother to do this.
2. if the technical terms, appear in the book. Those are the terms you should note down in your notebook and focus and study. The author carefully choose and explain not too many concepts but that is enough to get you the big picture what's going on.. for example. On TurboCharging.,,, he bring in the Exhaust Turbine and Intake compressor, therefore boost occur in the intake manifold... lastly and gentlely and he bring in another terms wastegate to complete the whole story. And that's not all. All the above talk is just theories.. In summary he bring in the real turbocharger construction, with captionSSSSS diagrams and real photo. To finally end the topics, he throw in intercooler to conclude that `the result is more power from the engine'.
3. babysitting you all the way from start to finish... well all textbook is supposed to teach and give you the best knowledge on the subject....Buy this book and you will totally agree with me..

skip the ` Problems, diagnosis , and service' of this book. You can't have the cake and eat it... ` the best of both world is only a dream' but read this book first and do the ASE questions and you will find it more meaningful and confidence to do so.. mark my words.

Postpond so many review on other books ex. Oxford learner's thesaurus but can't wait to say good things about this book
