SOME Good Information, Too Much Filler - Should Have Been Condensed to an Article!

In the book's Foreword, David Gillespie tells of losing 88 lbs. ten years ago simply by ceasing to eat sugar. Other ills associated with sugar consumption include tooth decay (Queen Elizabeth I loved sugar, and her teeth rotted), harming one's intestinal lining, pancreas, and heart, as well as being a likely contributor to anxiety and depression.

Author Damon went on a 60-day high-sugar diet (40 tsp/day), while also minimizing low-fat foods, and continuing his normal exercise regimen - all while monitored by doctors. I learned that most sugar intake today is through hidden sources - low-fat yogurt, soft drinks, some juices, canned soups, snacks, and cereal. (Damon also tells us that a soft-drink/day creates a 22% increase in one's chance of becoming diabetic - definitely not a good way to keep the doctor away.)

In one experiment, rats failed to become fat eating a high-fat diet, but did become fat eating a diet high in sugar. Zookeepers at lone location stopped feeding GMO bananas (increased sugar) to their monkeys because it led to hyperactivity. Damon also provided examples of sugar industry reactions to research/publications citing adverse results of sugar consumption - very similar to that decades ago of cigarette manufacturers.

During Damon's 60-day experiment, he gained 18 lbs, 4" around his waist, and his body fat reading rose 7% - WHILE MAINTAINING THE SAME TOTAL CALORIE INTAKE! Two months after 'withdrawal' he'd lost 13 of those 18 lobs, and his blood tests returned to normal.

Bottom-Line: It was well worth learning that the dangers of high sugar intake extend beyond obesity and diabetes; however, Damon did not address the long-term impacts involved. Simply reporting that liver levels of this or that went from x to y is meaningless to me. As for the recipes and drawings/pictures that took up too much of the book, they added nothing except filler.

Just received the book and have ordered the film. Just leafing through the book I was amazed by the facts...I've been dealing with sugar ,and it's health issues, in my own life for the past couple of years...reading, watching documentary videos and having periodic doctor check ups which are proving great results...I can't imagine that this book (and the movie) will do anything but enhance the knowledge that Americans (and the world) needs to sit up and take notice of...I'm upset that money hungry corporations have been 'feeding' us poison all these years.

This book was too cool. I am one of those people that work by picture. Read the instruction's later. And does this book have picture's. They are in color and magnified. It touches on almost all aspect's of sewing. The section I needed most was constructing a tailored notched collar. Thank You Singer! It was in this book. To go with this book I also bought The Vogue Sewing book. They work great together. Buy them both.

Grandma to the rescue!

I got a call one evening around the time of my grand daughter's 15th birthday. My son had gotten her a fancy Singer sewing machine and though they were reading the instruction manual, they stopped after threading the top of the machine, closed the book and he thought he was ready to sew. When it didn't work out, he called me and I choked back my chuckles and told him to open the manual back up and turn the page to thread the bobbin......he said, "The what????"
As I talked him through that part, I got on Amazon and searched for that trusty old Singer "How To Sew" book with the pen and ink illustrations that I had worn out in the 1960s when I was her age. I was delighted to find it is now this gorgeous photo illustrated guide. I ordered it fast and told them to just practice straight seams for 3 days and the mail would bring answers to all their questions. Does a grandma's heart good to be able to help so fast from a couple of hundred miles away! By the time I got there to visit in two weeks, she was already proficient enough for us to make her first complex garment! A dress with gathers, 6 darts several pleats, spaghetti straps and a cross over bodice!

Glad to Add it to My Library

I'm a self-taught/mom-taught sewist. The problem is that what I learned from Mom (no offense Mom) was one-off information about what I was sewing at the time.
Thanks to the Internet you can find all this information online but often only when you already know what you are looking for. This is what I'd expect to be required reading for a sewing class where you read the basics then do it in class on a project designed to accommodate the techniques you've learned.
The first night I got it and flipped through to find lots of new information I didn't know, some things I knew already and a handful of stuff I'll probably never need. I'm still quite glad to have this to reference when trying to wing a project an needing some technical advice! The photos feel very dated but the techniques have stood the test of time so there's no real complaining to do there!

Note: The book does not lay flat easily. Wish it did.

A must have for anyone who works in an organization that has data.

This book is very well written, easy to follow, and offers a very realistic roadmap to quickly improve all things data for any organization. It can pay for itself in a matter of a few hours. Mr. Seiner describes very common challenges with regards to data governance and ways that each of these challenges have been alleviated.

Executives within organizations are finally recognizing data as an asset as well as a potential liability. However, for many companies a large and involved data governance initiative is not practical or doable. Organizations need a way to implement data governance without disrupting the culture and incurring high costs. This book "Non-Invasive Data Governance™" (Seiner, 2014) makes a case for the trademarked term "Non-Invasive Data Governance". It outlines an approach for formalizing existing roles within the organization and leveraging existing processes that do not disrupt the culture or come with high price tags contrasted against more traditional data governance program approaches.

I found this book to be written in an easy to read format in which I could easily connect with the authors thoughts and ideas. I read it in one sitting as that is how enjoyable it was. I feel the author laid out a great blueprint to follow for many organizations looking to install, expand or improve upon their current data and information governance capabilities.

The premise of the book, as Bob so aptly states early on, is that '(a)ll organizations already govern data. They may do it informally, sometimes inefficiently, often ineffectively, but they already govern data. And they all can do it better.'

The book does a wonderful job of explaining the trademarked phrase that is at the heart of this book, 'non-invasive data governance,' as well as to guide the reader along the path of formalizing and improving existing data governance practices. Clear and compact

I strongly reccomend this book to the general practitioner and all people interested in epidemiology.
As an epidemiology student I have found in this book the explanation of many concepts in a clear and easy way, which is rather difficult to find in most epidemiology books. The authors took account of the thoughts of other great epidemiologist and epidemiology textbooks. I find this book very useful for all people that want to know a bit about epidemiology or want to know if epidemiology can be a good career choice.
The authors have a clear and down to the point narrative. They have explained the "philosophy" of epidemiology in about 100 pages, giving the knowledge necessary to start serious epidemiologic research.

I spend every day of my work life reading research proposals created by MDs with no understanding of the basic concepts of study design. If this book were in print, I would send each of these deficient investigators a copy. It's the perfect little tome for a lay reader (both medical consumers and MDs alike)

Many of us go through life without realizing about all the adverse forces and interests that are trying to manipulate us into doing or buying something we normally wouldn’t. This book has done a great job at making me more literate at manipulation and the dark methods people use to get their way. It explained so many things I had no idea about before and the writing was really good. Well researched and with great data. Well worth the read.

It is a sad truth that some people you meet in your life will try to manipulate you. Most of them will be relatively harmless such as marketing campaigns which although are a form of manipulation they are a pretty common practice and also quite obvious. Some people are not quite so harmless and it is important to know how to spot when someone is trying to manipulate you so that you can avoid it. Most people have heard of the many internet scams out there that can be laughable but the fact is they exist because some people do fall for them. But these scams are targeting a specific type of person, they do not want someone who can spot a scam they want someone who is more naive. Some scams are far more devious from pyramid schemes or multi-level marketing as I believe people are calling them now to very well crafted copycat websites hosted on common mistyping of banks addresses.

This book shows you the dark psychology behind these people so you know how they work, how you can spot them and how you can avoid them. The book shows you exactly how these people operate so you know what to expect and will see it coming a mile away. Defending against something you understand is far easier than something unknown. Overall this is a very well written and well-researched book that I found very interesting. A unique look into a side of human nature most of us would rather did not exist but it does and it never hurts to be informed.

Excellent educational resource as well as a fascinating read

This is one of those books that proved enlightening in ways I didn't expect. We've all heard of subliminal advertising and the conspiracy theorists love to tell stories of government attempts at mind control and most likely the majority of us have scoffed at the idea. But the truth is we've probably all been subjected to dark psychology at the hands of someone much closer to home over our lifetimes. Whether it's a manipulative partner you can't seem to walk away from or that one co-worker who seems to dangle the entire office on her own personal puppet strings, the ability of some people to understand the way you think and behave and know exactly how to push your buttons to best benefit themselves is more common than we realize. Of course that's the whole point, to manipulate and control those around them without anyone even realizing what's going on.

This book sheds some serious light on dark psychology, both in how it works and how to make it work, and how to realize it's being used on you. There were several points in here where this lightbulb went on about a certain someone I once knew or know today, and it was like wow, suddenly I get it. I used to think I was not the sort of person who could be easily manipulated or controlled. Sadly I'm now aware of how easy it is to do just that by understanding my personality and using it against me. After reading this I also recognized some of the tricks people have used on me in the past.

This goes beyond simple interpersonal manipulation though. The section on psychological secrets of con artists and the chapter on so-called heavenly psychopaths was fascinating. It also gets into how hypnotists and users of NLP are able to control the selective focus of whoever they're manipulating, and once you read that don't be surprised if you recognize it's been done to you at some point. Overall an excellent educational resource on understanding dark psychology, and by understanding it hopefully you'll be able to detect when someone is attempting to use it on you.

Passionate author but book not terribly useful for someone looking for branding self-help

I definitely felt the author's passion for the topic but I ended up abandoning my reading after the first three chapters and flipping through the remainder to make sure it didn't change in presentation and objective. And I'm someone who reads a ton on self-help, success and marketing as a solo attorney. I thought the writing was choppy, the narrative thought process slow and I was having to work to understand the points the author was trying to make. It's not really a self-help branding book, more like the author's argument on the importance of branding. But I think if you're buying this book, you're already sold on the importance of branding and are looking to learn in a practical way how to improve that.

Valuable Reference Source

This books is valuable for fans of Lalique's jewelry. Some of the pieces shown aren't available in other books. The book is large and most of the photography is very good. A few shots are somewhat blurry and seem rushed. My first two choices would be, "Imperishable Beauty - Art Nouveau Jewelry", and "Rene Lalique - Exceptional Jewelry". This book was worth it, to see his Medusa paperweight, even though the picture isn't the best shot I've seen.

Disappointing

Being a lifelong fan of Lalique's jewels, I have been hoping for a book on the Gulbenkian Museum's collection. I am not simply interested in photos of the pieces, but appreciate an informed discussion as well. The translating service that was used to translate the text is terrible - I mean, the gist of the discussion is lost because the English is so confusing to read! It is as if you think you are understanding what is being said, but the writing is so convoluted, exhausting to try to read - really! Here is an example:

"Firstly a remarkable working capacity associated to an ever present demanding character which would make the artist become (as previously stated) one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Art Nouveau jewellery master, and later on a successful and acclaimed glass craftsman/industrial glassmaker; and Calouste Gulbenkian, who in addition to being a successful businessman, became also the collector who gathered an extraordinary amount of high quality art works - "only the best is good enough for me" - which are revealing of his own personal taste."

"One should note that Lalique, being a remarkable draughtsman, also dominated perfectly the goldsmith techniques he had learnt with his master Louis Aucoc. He also distinguished himself in sculpture, to which contributed the courses he attended at Bernard Pallissy School and later on the support he received from his father-in-law and brother-in-law, sculptors Alphonse Ledru, father and son, who collaborated with Rodin."

If only the author's obvious expertise could have been translated more competently - this book would be an unqualified success, great photos and learned discussion. As it is, those of us who only read English will have to settle for half the loaf. Too bad.

Good Lalique catalogue

This offers a good selection of the pieces in this museum, with an emphasis on the pieces with various enamel techniques. I would have liked to have seen the crystal drinking fountain included just for contrast at the end.

About the Author
HARRISON H. BARRETT received a BS in physics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, an MS in Physics from MIT, and a PhD in applied physics from Harvard. Dr. Barrett is a professor in the Optical Sciences Center, the Department of Radiology, and the Program in Applied Mathematics and serves as Director of the Center for Gamma-ray Imaging. The holder of twenty-three U.S. patents, he is the recipient of the IEEE Medical Imaging Scientist Award and a Humboldt Prize and the coauthor, with William Swindell, of Radiological Imaging: The Theory of Image Formation, Detection, and Processing.

KYLE J. MYERS received a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Occidental College and an MS and PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. Dr. Myers is the Chief of the Medical Imaging and Computer Applications Branch of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She is a member of the SPIE, the Optical Society of America, and the Medical Image Perception Society (MIPS), and recently served as cochair of the Medical Image Perception Conference sponsored by MIPS.

Extremely thorough and rigorous resource

This book always amazes me whenever I use it for the absolutely incredible amount of material that it covers in such depth. I had the tremendous good fortune to have taken a Physical Optics course with Prof. Barrett, and it would be impossible to believe that one person can know so much unless you have personally talked with him about science or had a class with him. The rumor in the department is that Dr. Barrett is the only professor to at one time or other have taught ALL of the department's core graduate courses during his career at the College of Optical Sciences. Furthermore, he is one of the rare scientists who is an authority in his field both theoretically and experimentally, so you do not get a one-sided perspective as can often happen with science texts. The book reflects his vast knowledge, expertise, rigor, and thoroughness.

Of course, the book has several chapters on mathematical formalism, including the linear algebra, dirac delta function, Fourier theory, and group theory. The imaging theory is there, as well as diffraction theory. He covers photon statistics and detection, including the necessary quantum mechanics. He covers several advanced imaging concepts that I haven't any idea about myself. You probably could not find a more comprehensive book in the field of imaging and physical optics. Another benefit is that, at least for the chapters I have used, the individual chapters seem to stand well on their own and you are not forced to study the book in order.

This book is not for the faint of heart in any respect. The material itself is not for the faint of heart: it is extremely rigorous and will require your careful attention, but I believe it is well explained and manageable for someone who is serious about learning it. The size of the book is not for the faint of heart. I would hate to have to carry this thing around much (>1500 pages!!). The price is nothing to sneeze at either, at least for an impoverished graduate student like me, but Dr. Barrett told us that if you calculate the cost per equation, it may be one of the cheapest books on the market. Well, you get what you pay for. As far as anyone in the class found out, there are no typos, either. (Really. We were looking for them). This is certainly a relief for anyone who has much experience shelling out hundreds of dollars for expensive science textbooks.

I do not consider this book to be introductory material, but it is quite likely as close to exhaustive as anything you are apt to encounter in the physical sciences. If you are very serious about imaging or physical optics, this book will be an invaluable resource.

Tremendous Work and Very Clear

This is one of the few books that I will always treasure. Why? Because it is very clear. It has very very good discussions on everything it treats, and it treats a ton of material. In my engineering career, I have read or tried to read many many textbooks and this stands up as one of the absolute best. Barrett and Meyers give exquisite expositions on all of the mathematics necessary to study image science and many other related fields. For example, its treatment on probability, random processes, decision and estimation theory is actually better, more clear and more complete than many standard textbooks on the subject. If I get stuck reading any of them, I refer to this book and am saved.

I only wish they would issue it in two or three volumes. It is so ponderous (yet beautifully put together) if you carry it around you will get big muscles and get a good cardio workout!

I own it and leave it at home and I had the library at work get me a copy which I leave at work. If I want exercise I will go to my health club!

IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY OF THE 146 BUCKS IT COSTS.

If you want a great textbook to learn this technology from dont hesitate to buy it. You may need two - one for home and one for work, if your company wont buy you one.

Correction to the quotation from JEI

I was the reviewer for this book in the Journal of Electronic Imaging.

The quotation from my review in JEI as it appears on this site should read:

"...a worthwhile addition to the armamentarium of any serious researcher in image science and will be an oft-quoted reference for many years to come." (Journal of Electronic Imaging, April-June 2005)

The corrections pertains to the word, oft-quoted, which has, for some reason, appeared as "opt-quoted" on this site in addition to the reference, "Journal of Electronic Imaging" instead of "Journal of Electrical Imaging"

This book, of course, is outstanding as I have stated in my review in the JEI.
