About the Author

Burke Johnson is a professor in the Professional Studies Department at the University of South Alabama. His PhD is from the REMS (research, evaluation, measurement, and statistics) program in the College of Education at the University of Georgia. He also has graduate degrees in psychology, sociology, and public administration, which have provided him with a multidisciplinary perspective on research methodology. He was guest editor for a special issue of Research in the Schools focusing on mixed research (available online at www.msera.org/rits_131.htm) and completed a similar guest editorship for the American Behavioral Scientist. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. Burke is first author of Educational Research: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Approaches (Sage, 2014, 5th edition); second author of Research Methods, Design, and Analysis (Pearson, 2014, 12th edition); coeditor (with Sharlene Hesse-Biber) of The Oxford Handbook of Multimethod and Mixed Methods Research Inquiry (2015); coeditor (with Paul Vogt) of Correlation and Regression Analysis (2012); and associate editor of The SAGE Glossary of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (2009).
 

Larry Christensen (PhD University of Southern Mississippi) is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of South Alabama. Larry is the author of several successful textbooks and has published more than 60 journal articles.

Outstanding Research Methods Book

As a beginning graduate student, I first opened Educational research: Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods in the college bookstore. As I thumbed through the pages, the book fell open to a heading in the Preface titled Organization of the Book. There, laid out in succinct language, was the recipe for conducting a research project. Reading through six brief paragraphs describing the six sections of the book opened my understanding and sparked my interest in research before I reached the checkout line at the bookstore. I expected that this book would have a big impact on my intellectual development as a research practitioner. Four years later as a PhD student, I can tell you that my expectation has been fulfilled. I liked the second edition so much that I also bought the third edition. This book offers the complete package for learning about research. Here are few reasons (among many) why I value it:

1. The organization of the book makes it not only very useful as a textbook, but also as a handbook for conducting a research project. Given that Part 1 is an introduction to the research process, it is one of the most valuable sections in the book in that it not only facilitates the formation of a research schema for the beginning researcher; it provides an excellent recapitulation of the scientific approach to knowledge generation for the infrequent researcher who needs a refresher prior to engaging in a new project.
2. Key terms associated with the field of educational research are clearly defined in the text and brief definitions are included in the margins adjacent to the text where they are discussed. This feature is very useful for study and review of key concepts.
3. The book has a strong practitioner focus. Found throughout the book are well designed checklists, tables, and flowcharts that augment the research methods and processes explained in the text. "How to" chapters in the book explain how to write a research proposal, how to collect data, how to construct a questionnaire, how to analyze data, and how to write a research report.
4. The book includes an excellent companion website that has lectures, concept maps, journal articles, and a lot more. Here is a link to the companion website: [...]

This is a great book! The chapter on how to construct a questionnaire alone is worth the price of the book. If you're planning on doing educational research or research in the social sciences, I strongly recommend it. It has been invaluable to me as a masters student and as a doctoral student. This work is more than a textbook. It is a handbook that should be kept within arm's reach of anyone conducting educational research.

I purchased the top 5 books on the subject and started with this one because it was the smallest....i feel like returning the other 4, this gives me everything i need. i have a few questions that i wish i could email the Riki Roash to ask but otherwise i feel empowered! i sent out 11 letters the next day according to his instructions and now anxiously awaiting responses.

Title is misleading.

I read this book cover to cover in under an hour. For someone who does not understand how credit disputes work, this is a good book. But it does not show you how to remove ALL negative items from the credit report. Instead this light reading book shows how to dispute items on the credit report and hope that they don't get validated. If the items that are being disputed are outdated or not correct, the methods in the book will work. But for recent and valid negatives, the advice in the book may make things worse by giving the creditors the information they need to collect. So it can either work great or back fire big. It is a 50/50 roll, but It definitely will not show you how to remove ALL negative items. The author may have been in the business of removing negatives for 18 years, but the recent changes in the laws in the past few years make the information a little outdated. And the book does not mention how frequently and for what reason credit reporting agencies throw requests out as "frivolous" and how to avoid it.

Great readability. Great content. Overpriced.
By The Author of Easy Credit Repair Letters
I've read over twenty different books about credit repair, several of them right here on Amazon. Many of those books, including this one, are quite good. The only reason I have decided to rate this book 3 stars instead of four is the price. For reasons I'll note down below, I think that this title is overpriced for the credit repair category.

Almost all of the books that fall into the “credit repair” category here on Amazon provide essentially the same information, which is usually very general and easy to find online for free by searching Google. The TOC's of many of these books are similar to this:

1. What is a CRA (Credit Bureau) - their names, what they do, their mailing addresses
2. What is a Credit Score - what a FICO score is, how scores are calculated, how scores are used
3. Where to get your free credit report - annualcreditreport.com
4. How to read your credit report - what each section is, what information is on it, who is reporting the information to the credit bureaus
5. How to file a complaint with a Consumer Protection Agency - where to go if your disputes with the CRA's are unsuccessful

The above information comes directly from the CRA's themselves and from Federal Consumer Protection Laws which are available online. The reason all of these books contain this same information is because the process for filing disputes is easily learned online. Because this information is so readily available for free from other sources (and cheaper from many other Amazon choices) the only real way to base an opinion on this book is to qualify it based upon its readability and value, as its content is essentially the same as that of many other providers.

Having said that, I can say that the information contained in this book is laid out in an easy to understand, concise fashion that most readers will be able to easily digest. The author is very thorough and covers subjects with just enough information to inform readers without overwhelming them with unnecessary details or overly complicating the information. There also is no “legal jargon” or “legalese” that I have seen in some of the other books, making this book easy to process for those with no previous introduction to the subjects this book covers.

This book begins in a similar manner to other credit repair books. A short introduction where the author describes his or her background in the financial planning business (for over 18 years), as well as experience as a mortgage broker. During this time it is was in the author's interest to ensure that prospective clients would have a high enough credit score to purchase his or her products, so a leap into the world of self-directed learning began, and the author became an expert at repairing (or building, or rebuilding) her potential clients' credit scores.

The introduction is followed by several familiar chapters. “The Credit Bureaus”, “What's in Your Credit Report”, “What is a FICO Score”, “How to Order a Free Credit Report”, and other similarly titled chapters comprise the first half of this book. In this first half the information in this book is exactly the same as what can be found via a simple internet search. I believe that this means the content of this section is equal to other available choices, however I feel that the way the information is organized and presented in the book can save time over doing independent research.

The meat and potatoes of this book comes in the chapter “How to Remove ALL Negative Items from Your Report”. The book goes into detail about how to file a dispute with the credit bureau and then request what is known as a method of verification request. In a nutshell, if the credit bureau's don't follow procedures within a certain time-frame (typically 30 days), you have the right to have the information removed from your credit reports, whether it is accurate or not.

I did notice that throughout the book some of the writing is choppy or incomplete, however overall the book is very easy to read and understand.

The book then goes into a description of debt validation, a process when you are dealing directly with collection agencies and want to force them to comply with the law. This is one of the more important sections of the book, and I think that the way this section is written and presented will be great information for consumers to be able to act on.

There is a bonus section at the end entitled “10 Mistakes to Avoid While Repairing Your Credit”. This section goes over ten things to make sure you do when sending dispute letters. Some of the mistakes to avoid include sending your letters via regular (vs certified) mail, not keeping copies of all documents you send and receive, and communicating via electronic means, such as email or chats. All communication should be kept with certified letters to ensure you keep an accurate record of your communications and to preserve some of the rights your forfeit when you file a dispute online.

Overall, I think this is by far one of the best books on Amazon regarding credit repair. It is thorough, contains great information, and is easy to read. If you can part with the almost ten bucks to purchase it, or if you see it on sale, I highly recommend you purchase a copy. I am rating the book 3 stars simply because I think the same information can be found cheaper via many other sources, and therefore I have a hard time justifying the high price of this book compared to others in the Amazon Credit Repair Category.

Whatever choice you decide to make or book you decide to buy, remember to dedicate yourself to taking action and following through. It can take a long time to fix your credit, so get started right now so you can be ready for the future.

Not the last word

This book which skates quickly over thin ice, is not the reference that you should be depending on when preparing for a disaster. It is probably not even the book you should be consulting when disaster is about to strike. To my mind it is more the kind of publication that will provide 105 topics to discuss around a campfire while reviewing the sorts of extended preparations that should be made by people living in a zone known to be prone to one kind of natural disaster or another. With just a few hundred words devoted to each scenario, this is no in-depth primer, but it could be a useful aide-memoire or conversation starter from which to begin

Get ready for disaster!

This new book from the editors of Outdoor Life is really neat. As someone who likes to be prepared and the daughter of an Eagle Scout, it's a great little handbook of some of the most common disasters. I really liked the first couple of articles about BOBs ("bug-out" bag). They include a list of what you should have in your emergency bag. Then the book proceeds to go through a little bit of first aid, and here's where I have my one qualm. Obviously some situations are so bad that medical attention is required, for things like fourth degree burns, but the book could explicate a little more into how to deal with these injuries if medical attention is not available. The book also misses out with arterial bleeding here. And although we may never have to deal with such things, the knowledge may come in handy some day. Otherwise, the book is really informative with great diagrams. The rest of the book goes through common natural disasters and also some useful things to know, like how to siphon fuel if need be. And it is a nice size to store with your BOB bag for reference!

Pure excellence, but with a disclaimer

There are 87 other reviews here, so all I will do is offer the following breakdown for people interested in buying this book. Put yourself in one of these categories:

a) Competative runners: this is an increadible book, period. The best part about it is reading about a little tiny nuance in Quenton's running life and saying to yourself, "I know exactly what he's talking about, wow", which will happen literally hundreds of times. Your hopefully already-substantial appreciation for the sport will likely increase tenfold with this book.

b) The casual runner, recreational, or other athlete: this is an excellent book and is very highly reccomended. You probably will not appreciate it to it's fullest extent, but there are aspects of the story and how it is told that will be enjoyed by anyone with the capacity for excitement from sports or human physical endeavors.

c) The non-athlete: this book may not make sense to you. Not in the literary sense, but it may seem as though there is little direction in the story, and you might read it and then find yourself thinking that nothing interesting really happened, and you are not really to blame for this. There is still a good chance that you will find it enjoyable, but if you are looking for a piece of literature based on traditional merits (plot, character development, etc) there are likely better books out there for you to spend time on.

Clearly I thought this book was one of the best I've ever read. However, I hope this breakdown about who in particular might enjoy it the most was helpful.

So much more than just the best "running" novel of all time

Once a Runner has been described as the best running novel of all time - and I can't argue with that. However it is also so much more than just a running book. As a middle of the pack weekend warrior I've never experienced the elite levels of success described in the book, however it gives a great insight into what that would take, the complete engulfment of life by running and the highs and lows experienced along the way.

Parker however does a wonderful job in developing characters that are easily related to and understood so that even non-runners would be absorbed by the story. At points it was a little predictable however I still had more than enough times reading "just one more page..." to find out what happened next. A classic for all the right reasons.

Bettger went through a lot, took so many hits to his ego, then finally became numb to rejections and set backs- focusing on the positives in his life which granted him phenomenal success. He also has some interesting encounters with some of the world's greatest. Yes, this normal guy, so focused and determined earned the respect of some of the world's elite. Read on. You'll enjoy.

The more of these "old school" books on advertising and sales I read the more I chuckle. As Solomon says, "There is nothing new under the sun." These "new school gurus" are doing nothing more than regurgitating these classics as their own ideas. Seems to me better reading comes from the early to mid 1900s. The writing is much more sincere and candid.

All that said, I liked reading this book. A lot of good principles and true stories packed in a half a day read. This is the best book on sales I have ever read. Solid non-gimmicky sales tactics that can be applied with success today. An additional bonus of some Dale Carnegie thrown in the mix was a pleasant surprise.

If you are starting out or struggling in sales read this book.

Lots of straightforward selling wisdom

This book is direct and to the point, easy to understand and touches on a lot of wisdom, without clouding the issues.
It was written long ago, but is so well written that it is totally applicable in today's world. Because it was written long ago, it doesn't touch on any of the new tools we use for selling ( and for just about everything else), but the wisdom behind can be applied to great use in deciding how to use new technologies to your advantage. In the end, computers don't sell, people sell. The people who are behind creating websites, behind the emails and Skype calls, posting pictures on Instagram and Twitter.

I am a self studying Korean learner. I very much recommend this book as a stepping stone tool, especially if you have already grasped the Hangul alphabet and can tie it in with making some words as there are no Romanizations available or any CD that you can follow and learn along with. I still purchased this more as a second step for reading and learning a variety of words. Some of the sections in book include: personal info, family, health, everyday activities, hobbies, money numbers calendar clothes colors foods, home school job travel entertainment nature, shopping travel and descriptions. I also bought McGraw-Hill's Korean Illustrated Dictionary http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071769005/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i04?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does have Romanizations (if you are looking for a good beginners dictionary-with CD) as a 1st dictionary and Word by Word for the 2nd one. Hope this helps

As a retired ESOL teacher, I can assure you this is "the" book for beginners. Why because it has pictures. Think of your kitchen. Now try and label every appliance and tool in it. Give each item etc. a number. Then write the English and the corresponding foregien language next to it. An awesome task. That's what this book does and it give an incredible amount of practical vocabulary for everyday life skills not just the kitchen. Try it you'll love it! And it is worth every penny of the price. English/Spanish, English/Russian, English/Chinese and on and on!

All the books in this series are excellent

I recommend all the books in this series for beginning-level English learners. This picture dictionary is particularly useful if the student is an absolute beginner and has no English literacy whatsoever. There is no need to purchase it new, however, as it is solely a dictionary. It might not be entirely helpful if you were to use it in a very rural setting or a developing country since the pictures represent things most found in cities or developed countries.

It's the bible of Ortho in our FP office. I gave the 4th edition to the wife and I used that one a lot. Have not had a chance to look through this enough yet to know if there were a lot of changes, but either way, this is one of the better ortho books out there for FP.

the one for sprinter repairs!

This is the best manual for the sprinter I have found.
But it has little info on american models engine and transmission.
Wiring diagrams are easy to use without all other systems in the pictures.

This is an outstanding colour text/atlas for spinal wedge osteotomies. Triangulation and wedge resections of the vertebral column is studied and analyzed operatively involving transplants of both bone and cartilage. Operative technique, radiography, pain management and stabilization is carefully considered in sequence. Indications involving underlying disease states, and cost benefit analysis is considered for each pathology including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar instabilities.

Special consideration for scoliosis and kyphosis patients is noted. I think the intraoperative photos and line drawings of surgical approaches and relevant anatomy are good to excellent in quality. I recommend this book for all Spine and Orthopedic surgeons.
