I originally bought this book 1994. It totally changed my life. Since then I have loaned it to several people. The last time I didn't get it back so I bought another copy. Following the principles in this book I have been able to accomplish much more than I could have accomplished otherwise.

The life-changing experience!

I bought this book by 'accident' since it was included in the Franklin Covey daily planner package. I always thought the to-do list was a good thing that people invented even though back then, at the end of the day, I didn't really feel that satisfied after all items had been crossed out.
This book totally turned the notion around. In order to experience inner-peace, the to-do list, which they called prioritized daily activities, has to be tied directly to your governing values.
All the ideas in this book are principle-oriented. That means they have been tested in the real world to bring happiness in life - if you apply them deliberately. It has changed my life two years ago, and hopefully it will change yours.

An American living in the UK, Eliot Siegel has been a professional fashion and portrait photographer for over 25 years. He has worked for a multitude of fashion magazines in New York, Milan, Paris, and London and has shot for Bloomingdales, Macy's NY, JC Penney's, Reebok, Nokia, and Motorola. Siegel lectures and gives workshops on fashion, portrait, and fine art photography at various colleges, and has been Associate Lecturer in Photography at Plymouth University in England. Eliot Siegel is also the author of Fashion Photography Course (Barron's).

A wonderful answer for "Where do we go now?"

There's an urban legend that the reason that Guns & Roses "Sweet Child of Mine" ends with the lyrics "Where Do We Go Now" was because Axl was asking a question, not because he was singing a lyric. He literally wanted to know "where do we go now?" and that ended up sticking as part of the song.

When shooting models, sooner or later, you will run into a "Where do we go now" moment. In many cases, the model will want clear instruction about what the vision is, where to stand and where to put her hands. The photographer will need to have a good set of ideas to blast past periods of when the imagination runs dry, and avoid the moment where nobody knows what to do next.

The classic way of doing a model shoot is to get the safe shots in the bag before experimenting. The problem with experimenting is that you can get stuck with a lot of stuff that's not working before getting back on track.

That's what makes this book great, by showing how to see how variations might lead to something you might not have thought about, and you can get your homework done before spending (wasting) time at the shoot. You can also start adding more "safe shots" to your bag of tricks by having the poses you want well thought out before hand.

The book is beautifully done, with a short technical section and a very extensive posing section.

The poses are organized by position, so it does make it very nice on how to get from one pose to another with a minimal amount of effort. It makes sense in terms of organization, but there are also downsides too as it may not lead to the best way to get a series of poses in mixed positions. Still, I am glad that it's organized by position, because I've seen plenty of posing books that were basically unusable because of how complex the organization was.

The second thing I'll note is that it's written for the photographer as the intended reader, not the model. Again, this is not a ding, but just thought I'd clarify that. The model can definitely pick up a lot of value out of this, but the text is aimed more towards the shooter.

The third thing, it would be nice if there were some way of communicating a series of poses to a model without flipping through the book itself. Would love a way to have an app that communicates just the poses I want to work on rather than pulling out the book and trying to explain the shot.

Great book overall, heartily recommend it. You can't go wrong having this on your shelf.

Kindle Version Formatting is Horrible!

The publisher evidently didn't bother (or care) about how this would look on a Kindle Fire so shame on them. Examples of what I'm referring to. Paragraphs with 1 word columns that go on for page after page.

Another example: Series of photos where the caption for one photo appears on the next page above (or below) the next photo. Depending on the aspect ratio of the photo, there are sometimes a caption above and below the photo with one being for a photo on a different page.

While the content itself is great, the total disregard by the publisher makes the Kindle version of this book almost useless.

finally a posing book worth it's money!

There are many posing books out there, most - if not all - are useless to me. Generic poses, not much explained, unexciting photos.

This book is different. I love almost all the main photos in this book (subjective of course) and the variations shown with what to avoid and why are really helpful. Light diagrams add to the usefulness.

I don't think there's a pose not covered in this book. Keep it in your studio or bag (though it's heavy) and if you run out of steam during a shoot, open any random page and go from there.

The poses are more towards (high) fashion and maybe a bit of glam, not necessarily what you'd use to photograph grandmothers or female executives, everything is very stylish with sexy undertones.

Easy the best book I've seen on posing, and I've looked at quite some.

Two powerful figures and the birth of a science

"When Nietzsche Wept" is a fictional encounter between Friedrich Nietzsche, the nineteenth century philosopher, and Josef Breuer, a Viennese doctor who is one of the founders of psychoanalysis. The story takes place in 1882, when Doctor Breuer accepted to help Nietzsche fight his hemicrania and despair. What follows is a captivating story of intrigue, betrayal and the development of an intimate friendship. But the book's highlight is the dialogue between Nietzsche and Breuer, in which the author touches upon the issues of life, death, love, lust, passion and freedom.
In the process of the story, Irvin Yalom presents Nietzsche's philosophy in a portrayal that is candid and captures the complicated mystique of the brilliant philosopher. And, Dr. Yalom's story-telling is so lucid that one can fully comprehend the logic of Nietzsche's philosophy. In the end, "When Nietzsche Wept" is a window into Nietzsche's innermost thoughts and psyche.
Equally compelling is Yalom's discussion of psychoanalysis. If Nietzsche's words are half of the book's appeal, the other half has to be the development of the dialogue between Nietzsche and Breuer. The psychoanalytical method is being invented as the book progresses -- and Dr. Yalom has done an excellent job of presenting the foundations of psychoanalysis as if springing out of spontaneous dialogue between two men.
This book is not only an excellent and easy read, but also highly didactic, appealing to those interested in philosophy or psychology. But more broadly, Dr. Yalom's words have such power and applicability that no one could be left uninterested in what he has to say.

Intellectually Challenging and Personally Meaningful

This is one of the most intellectually stimulating, personally relevant, important books I have ever read. What a rare treat Yalom has given the world. That being said, this book may not be for everyone (but what is?). In many ways, I feel as if this novel was written just for me, and I feel sure that many other readers likewise come away feeling the book was written especially for them. Do you have to know Nietzsche in order to enjoy this book? You do not, but it will certainly appeal to you more if you do. I approached this book purely as a Nietzsche admirer, and I worried that my favorite philosopher might be portrayed poorly or unacceptably in its pages. In fact, he was not. No one can say whether this fictional treatment of Nietzsche is a true depiction of this great man, but it really does not matter. The importance of this book comes not through the descriptions of its characters, but from the meaning you as an individual take from its themes. These themes are grand and universal, the themes that Nietzsche addressed in his factual life--the meaning of life, fear of aging and death, each person's place in society, and both aloneness and loneliness. Everyone knows these themes, the emotions they stir up, the doubts they employ as daily hurdles on the living of one's life, the truly cosmic loneliness that each individual knows and combats at some point or points in his/her life. Not everyone can face these challenges or even acknowledge them; those who cannot will do well to stay away from this book.
What a joy it is to read a truly intellectually challenging work in these modern times. Don't read this book to be entertained. Read this book to seek understanding of life and your place in it. I cannot stress enough how personal the message of this book seems to be. In the final pages, Nietzsche revealed to Dr. Breuer his one great fear, and that fear was my own great fear, expressed in words that described it better than I ever could. I had to put the book down momentarily and just say "My God . . ." That gave this book incredible meaning for me. I should say that I did not come away overjoyed or overly burdened from the experience of finishing the book, but I certainly came away more in tune with my own thoughts and my own philosophy, challenged to remain steadfast in my own intellectual thoughts and pursuits, and buoyed (yet not elated) to know that at least one other person on earth has knowledge of the intellectual and emotional struggles that I sometimes resigned myself to believe were solely my own.
Please, do not start reading this book unless and until you are ready to devote yourself to it and to yourself. The first few chapters are not gripping and do not really offer a visionary glimpse of the meaning and magic of the book. The early conversations, particularly between Nietzsche and Breuer, are sometimes rather stilted and "phony." Do not be discouraged in the early stages of the read because intellectual stimulation and personal challenge await you soon thereafter, and I believe that you will find yourself hard pressed to stop reading until the very end. More importantly, the book will remain with you even after you have placed it back on the shelf. That is the greatest praise that a novel can be given.

Inspiration Through Sorrow In Old Vienna

Breuer and Nietzsche never met, but Dr. Yalom considers the intriguing possibilities in this novel of psychological and philosophical ideas. Dr. Yalom is a professor of phsychiatry at Stanford and a proponent of "existential psychotherapy," so he is able to create drama derived almost entirely from the emotional portraits of the characters rather than the actions and struggles of the characters in the external world. Yalom's achievement is to make the reader care about Breuer and Nietzsche as they struggle to confront (or avoid) their greatest fears and weaknesses. The reader is drawn into intimate conversation with the brilliant but unloveable Nietzsche and the gifted but ungrateful Breuer. The necessary whining is balanced by just enough action and intellectual history to propel the narrative forward. Along the way the genesis of psychotherapy and existentialism is consisely explained using dialogue from Breuer, Freud and Nietzsche as well as quotations from their actual works. But this book not about theory. The sorrow of these great men is transformed into inspiration for the reader as they struggle to embrace the wisdom of amor fati, to love one's fate. We are reminded of our own need to accept complete responsibility for our choices and to boldly face life's challenges. One need not embrace an existentialist worldview to find inspiration in such advice. Neither does the Professor preach philosophy in his drama. Rather, the reader is invited to achieve a synthesis of his own after observing the strivings of the characters. Vienna was an intellectual microcosm of Europe in the late 19th Century, so the city bcomes a character in the story, with various characters, some historical, some fictional, acting as the sounding board for Breuer's and Nietzsche's nascent philosophies. This is not a book for readers put off by lengthy dialogues, and it is short on dramatic action and romance. But for those who might enjoy urgent and intimate conversation with great minds on the verge of their greatest achievements, When Nietzsche Wept may be as therapeutic as an afternoon with close friends over cafe melange at the Cafe Landtmann.

About the Author

Wong Kiew Kit, popularly known as Sifu Wong, is the fourth generation successor of Venerable Jiang Nan from the famous Shaolin Monastery in China and Grandmaster of Shaolin Wahnam Institute of Kungfu and Chi Kung. He received the “Chi Kung Master of the Year” Award during the Second World Congress on Chi Kung held in San Francisco in 1997. He has practiced and taught the Shaolin arts for more than 3 decades and has more than 60,000 students all over the world.

Extremely thorough Zen reference

I found this book to be an extremely indepth reference of Zen Buddhism. In comparison to others that I have read I found this to be very easy to understand, and with such a subject as Zen that is not an easy task. As simple as it is, with its all of its vast information and insight, one could read this book 100 times and get something new from it each time. I would definately recommend this book to anyone, from someone with a new curiosity about Zen, to a master seeking new insight and enlightenment.

Now that's good Zen

Zen Buddhism has its home in the Shaolin temple in China, which is also known for its gongfu. The samurai in Japan also were ardent practioners of Zen to improve their swordsmanship. These phenomena has baffled scholars for many years: for arts that practice fighting, why practice a "peaceful" religion/spiritual philosophy? This book has the answer. It explains the concrete connection between Zen and gongfu.

On the whole its an enjoyable book. Master Wong uses various sutras and koans to explain different types of meditations, Zen or otherwise, while also givine a good comparison as between other forms of Buddhism as well as tracing its roots from India to China to Japan. On the whole, for those who want to have a well rounded regimen in training for both mind and body, this is a great book to start. This book gives a good introduction to qigong and gongfu as well as best ways to prepare for meditation.

I only give 4 stars for a couple of reasons. Master Wong does tend to repeat himself in this book. Also in writing about martial arts in general, he seemed to lack humility about the subject. Yes, I also agree gongfu is good, but I also think using other forms of martial arts, like karate and taekwondo, can also be suited for Zen study; as that is how I'm doing this training.

Either way, it's a good book to check out. If doesn't want to be too bogged down in mere intellectual studies of sutras, this helps one in getting to the core of what Zen is really about.

I've read the Hebrew translation, and it was absolutley splendid. After several vague books of Zen and Budhism, it was throughly eye-opening to follow Master WWK, as he leads readers through the basics of both, carefully detailing Zen from basic principles to more elaborate questions, and never leaving your hand.
You know those rare thrills you get out of learning something that really means something? This is it. If you want to understand Zen, that's the one book you should begin with.

About the Author
Michael Levy, PhD, is the Charles Clarke Reynolds Professor of Marketing and Director of the Retail Supply Chain Institute at Babson College. He received his PhD in business administration from The Ohio State University and his undergraduate and MS degrees in business administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught at Southern Methodist University before joining the faculty as professor and chair of the marketing department at the University of Miami. Professor Levy has developed a strong stream of research in retailing, business logistics, financial retailing strategy, pricing, and sales management. He has published over 50 articles in leading marketing and logistics journals, including the Journal of Retailing, Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Journal of Marketing Research. He currently serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, International Journal of Logistics Management, International Journal of Logistics and Materials Management, ECR Journal, and European Business Review. He is coauthor of Retailing Management, 6e (2007), the best-selling college-level retailing text in the world. Professor Levy was co-editor of Journal of Retailing from 2001–2007. Professor Levy has worked in retailing and related disciplines throughout his professional life. Prior to his academic career, he worked for several retailers and a housewares distributor in Colorado. He has performed research projects with many retailers and retail technology firms, including Accenture, Federated Department Stores, Khimetrics, Mervyn’s, Neiman Marcus, ProfitLogic (Oracle), Zale Corporation, and numerous law firms. He co-chaired the 1993 Academy of Marketing Science conference and the 2006 Summer AMA conference.

About the Author
Janis Winehouse was born in New York but grew up mainly in London. While bringing up her son, Alex, and daughter, Amy, she completed two degrees―an Open University degree in science, followed by a bachelor of pharmacy at the University of London. Janis raised Amy on the music of Carole King and James Taylor, and supported her throughout her musical career. In 2003, Janis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was forced to take early retirement in 2009. She now devotes her time to raising money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation and the MS Society. She lives in north London with her husband, Richard, and three cats: Gizzy, Moggy, and Minty.

Two Thumbs up for Janis. A story of the Real Amy.

This is by far the most compelling, honest, and well written work about Amy Winehouse to date. Amy's mother is really the forgotten heroine in the story of Amy's life. She was always quietly in the background, but she probably knew the real Amy better than any other person. She raised her and experienced everything; the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is an intensely private account, but there is no sensational "tabloid style" feel about it. Unlike some other books to come out, the reader senses that Mrs. Winehouse has no agenda or ulterior motives. One comes away from the book really liking Janis, and feeling profoundly sorry for Amy, and her tragic mistakes. This is also a great book about addiction and how it effects families. The constant thread of the story is that Amy was a really sweet girl who opened a really dark, frightening world for herself; one that she eventually hated and tried desperately to get out of.
With that said, there is one thing that will always be lacking; and that is Amy's story in her own words. That story, unfortunately, is one Amy will never get to tell; and we are all at a loss for it.

Uncensored, heartfelt and well written. "Loving Amy" delivers the heart wrenching story as lived by Amy Winehouse's mother, Janis Winehouse, from the birth of Amy, her untimely death and what great work the Amy Winehouse Foundation is doing to raise awareness and help for youth that are disadvantaged and/or struggling with addiction. Even if you are not an Amy Winehouse, which I am, this story should be read by any family that is struggling with an addict.
Kudos Mrs. Janis Winehouse for pouring your heart in sharing your memories, knowledge and courage! Bless You!!

Love this book better than Mitch Winehouse's book

I have read "Amy, my daughter" wrote by Mitch Winehouse and to be frank based on my opinion "Loving Amy" is the best and yet honest book I have read based on Amy's life. I feel that Mitch's book was somewhat sugarcoating and perhaps Mitch was delusional one while dealing his situation with Amy's addiction, and also because the book was written shortly after Amy's passing. So I believe Mitch was somewhat overprotective with Amy's image and memory since she is no longer here. "Loving Amy" book was released 3 years after Amy's death so I feel that Janis had some time to reflect her own experience and the book was written beautifully yet haunting. I cannot help it but feel for Janis when she explained her relationship with Amy was not strong prior to her death, for instance she hadn't met Reg Traviss till Amy's death and Mitch had known him for a while (Amy mentioned in interview for Body and Soul that Her father, stepmother and her boyfriend attended Tony Bennett's concert that night when Amy first met Tony Bennett). I highly recommended this book for Amy's die hard fan.
