Many students in the Armyville school district were destined to be affected by this and several subsequent deployments. These deployments, however, represented such a new and volatile situation that the school district lacked―as indeed most Canadians lacked―the understanding required for an optimum organizational response.
Growing Up in Armyville provides a close-up look at the adolescents who attended Armyville High School (AHS) between 2006 and 2010. How did their mental health compare with that of their peers elsewhere in Canada? How were their lives affected by the Afghanistan mission―at home, at school, among their friends, and when their parents returned with post-traumatic stress disorder? How did the youngsters cope with the stress? What did their efforts cost them? Based on questions from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, administered to all youth attending AHS in 2008, and on in-depth interviews with sixty-one of the youth from CAF families, this book provides some answers. It also documents the partnership that occurred between the school district and the authors’ research team.
Beyond its research findings, this pioneering book considers the past, present, and potential role of schools in supporting children who have been affected by military deployments. It also assesses the broader human costs to CAF families of their enforced participation in the volatile overseas missions of the twenty-first century. "

Deborah Harrison is a professor (retired) and adjunct professor of sociology at the University of New Brunswick and a former member of the Canadian Forces Advisory Council to Veterans Affairs Canada. She is co-author of No Life Like It: Military Wives in Canada (1994) and author of The First Casualty: Violence Against Women in Canadian Military Communities (2002) and numerous articles.

Patrizia Albanese is a professor at Ryerson University and past-president of the Canadian Sociology Association. She is co-author of Youth & Society (2011) and More Than It Seems (2010); author of Children in Canada Today (2016) and Child Poverty in Canada (2010); and co-editor of Sociology (2016). She has done research on child care in Canada and youth in CAF families.

Perfect for Modern Business Traveler

Bought this book because it was recommended by a guest speaker in the class. I just read about the country I really know about and it seems like the author has really done his homework. The minute details are covered about culture and traits which you will not find in any talk show or 'polished' publications but so significantly important when doing business in foreign country. For example, don't say "Thank you" to Indians after they serve you a meal... It's a form of repayment, almost an insult and doesn't build relationship. Rather, invite your host for the same hospitality. That's how you build business relationships!! Also, Brazilians tend to be more analytical than their Latin American counterparts! Or you have to print your business cards in Portuguese and English when doing business in Brazil. They aren't too thrilled about being talked to in Spanish!! They don't consider themselves Hispanic! I found it cool to know...

GREAT tool ~ true to cultures, very useful personally & professionally. For anyone struggling, or upset with other people of another culture this really helps understand them. I have heard people share how hurt they were by others, or want to change others. What they didn't understand is the cultural difference, that it's not about them, and how very very different we all are based on what we know. It could really help not just show respect business wise, but help relationships if a person is open enough to listen & learn.

This book was absolutely interesting. Since I had been in the real estate business and we had many foreign buyers interested in real estate in this area, you need to know the proper etiquette when working with them to find a house or commercial building. This book has it all.

A copy should be sent to the President since he doesn't seem to know how and when to book, or it should be sent to the WH protocol office.

Something as simple as a "thumbs up" which means okay to us, means something else to many foreign people. Gestures, conversational tips, hand shaking, clothes that you are wearing. In one country they will put down what you are wearing -- in jest.

Even if you are not working with foreign clients, it is an interesting book and you can learn so much about other peoples and their customs. It also teaches you what to expect as to how they treat and think about us. Some did not like dealing with a female real estate associate, so I would have to work through a male associate -- and of course share my profits!

Fascinating read!

An extremely well-written guide to making trick card decks and performing some very cool card tricks

I was already a fan of Mark Frauenfelder from his work for the always-entertaining BOING BOING website and WIRED magazine, so I bought this book more out of curiosity about what fresh insights he might bring to an old area of magic than in order to learn any magic tricks. Once I had read it, I was surprised by several things. First, I was amazed that at age 65 I didn’t know that many of the coolest card tricks done by famous magicians (including mind-bogglers like David Blaine) were made possible by small and fairly simple alterations in the cards. The second revelation was how much fun it is to perform the card tricks Frauenfelder explains in the book. When I show them to my wife and friends, they naturally assume the decks are tricked out somehow, since they know I’ve never been into doing magic. But unless I explain, they usually have no idea how I do the tricks. Either way, each trick is good for both praise and laughs. My third revelation was how true Frauenfelder’s major rule of performing the tricks is: “Practice a lot.” It takes time to learn to be smooth at shuffling, at being able to spot or feel the small differences in the cards, and to arrange and rearrange them properly to make the tricks work. One thing I was not surprised at was how well written this book is. Frauenfelder has always been an extremely good writer with a knack for explaining things. His directions for making the trick decks and performing the tricks are all very clear and understandable. The full color illustrations and photos in the book are also excellent. If you have any interest in magic and card tricks, or if you’re a fan of Mark Frauenfelder, you’ll want this book.

Tricks you can earn

Mark is a generous soul, a great writer and someone who is willing to patiently stand by as you learn to do it yourself. He taught me how to upgrade my espresso machine, and he will teach you to make a stripper deck.

The magic of this technique is that building a trick instead of buying one is, pardon the phrase, magical.

About the Author
Dr. Harmening is an accomplished and experienced educator, administrator, researcher, and author. Currently, Dr. Harmening is President of D.H. Publishing & Consulting, Inc. She is also the Director of Curriculum of the SBB/MS program in Clinical Laboratory Management, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science at Rush University. Dr. Harmening is a well know author and national/ international speaker. Her publications are many and include her major book titles: Clinical Hematology and Fundamentals of Hemostasis (fifth edition), Laboratory Management Principles and Processes (second edition) and Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices (fifth edition). Dr. Harmening is the founding Chair of two departments: Clinical Laboratory Science at Thomas Jefferson University and the Department of Medical & Research Technology at the University of Maryland. She was professor, Chair and Assistant Dean during her tenure at the University of Maryland. In 1999 she received the Excellence in Education Award a national recognition given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. In 2001 and 2003 she was named one of Maryland s Top 100 Women by the Daily Record in recognition for her contributions to communities in the state of Maryland. In 2008 she received the American Association of Blood Banks Sally Frank Memorial Award and Lectureship and the Massachusetts Association of Blood Banks Karen Tiegerman Memorial Lectureship Award . Many in the field of Clinical Laboratory Science Education remember Dr. Harmening s Curriculum for the 21st Century symposia started in the early 1990 s which are currently continuing with Rush as a co-sponsor. Dr. Harmening also held the position of Director of Instruction and Customer Learning, Heritage Division, the American Red Cross in 2008 and 2009. In this role she developed an on-line continuing education program for laboratory professionals and physicians called SUCCESS, a Series of Unique Consistent Continuing Education Self-Study programs She has been the principle investigator for seven grants from Health and Human Services, and has completed over 15 clinical trials. Dr. Harmening has served on numerous national, statewide, and local committees and advisory boards. Currently, she is a member of the ASCP Editorial Advisory Board: Medscape Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, but has served as Chair of the Research and Development Committee of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry from 1995 to 1998. Dr. Harmening was a member of the National Commission on Allied Health Implementation Task Force of the Department of Health and Human Services from 1996 to 1998. Dr. Harmening has been in the field of Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine for over 25 years. Her research in red cell and platelet preservation has led to seven patents. Dr. Harmening s original research dealt with the use of solid time-released buffering systems for the storage of red cells and platelets. Her current research focuses on CD34+ stem cells isolated from cord blood, and she was the first to investigate the effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 on untreated and CD34-selected umbilical cord blood. In the future, Dr. Harmening would like to expand and improve her current publications and venture into new areas of writing. Her philosophy in life is to live by standards and principles, maintain a positive attitude, value family and friends, surround yourself with positive, energetic people, and believe in yourself.

Really, I have no stong opinon about it

If you're looking to buy this, then you're probably getting it for a class.

From what I've read so far, It tries to keep the topics simple and straightforward. However i found that I do not really need the book & it's been relegated to simply support my class notes.

It's a good book, however If you think you can do without it for you class, it's very possible.

Sad for the book to end

I am so glad I picked this book for review. I had no idea it was based on a new movie coming out until I received it in the mail. Having God save my marriage personally I could relate to many things in this story.
I just love the character Miss Clara, I wish she was my friend and neighbor. Such an awesome and encouraging woman of God. I was sad for this book to end. I looked forward to sitting down and reading it. I want to see the movie now, but I am so glad I read the book first.
I have a renewed fire in me now. I want to have a closer relationship with the Lord. I want to go back to praying for the needs of my family, friends loved ones and strangers I meet. I feel like I have slacked off in that area of my life. This book has inspired me to try again. To seek the Lord in a new way. It has opened a door for me and I am excited. Now I don't know if this story will do that for you, but I sure am glad I read this book.
It isn't a "self help" or "this is the way to get God to move" book. It is a fictional story as far as I know. It's just such a wonderfully inspiring story. I like how it doesn't portray Christians as "perfect and having it all together". They make it clear it is through a relationship with Jesus that things can change in your life. Grace is shown throughout this story and that is so important.
I got so much enjoyment from this story. I felt a range of emotions and I was able to get lost in the story. I felt like I knew this family. It is such a sweet approach to an important part of Christianity. Prayer is a vital part of our relationship with Jesus.
In the back of the book there are discussion questions. So, if you want to get a small group going, the questions are back there for you already. Also there are color photos in the center of the book from the movie making. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Jesus. Also if you enjoyed Fireproof & Courageous you will probably enjoy this one as well.

This book changed me

This book is changing my life. I don’t say that about a lot of fiction books but this one opened to my eyes to an area I have been weak in: prayer.
This book portrays realistically the way a marriage can crumble, the way a woman can place all the blame on her husband and not see her own part in it, the temptations a man can face, the wounds of a young daughter.
As someone who has walked through pain in their marriage and healing I can tell you they way the healing is shown is true. It might be a bit faster because it is a book but it isn’t instant. There is anger below the surface from betrayal and Chris showed that.
Miss Clara is wonderful character, someone we all need in our lives who spurs us on and is honest with us. The book holds true to the fact that God doesn’t always answer when we want or how we want but He is always listening.
This is an excellent book and I can’t wait to see the movie that will be coming out August 28th.

Amazing!!

What an amazing book! I couldn't put this book down! I literally read it in two days. This book is such a wake up call for Christians. Praying is a powerful weapon for Christians to use and we don't seem to tap into that power. This book made me see the flaws in my own prayer life and lit a fire under me to start a new in my prayer life. Chris does any awesome job with the novelization of the movie. I loved Ms. Clara's character. She made me want to be better as a mother and wife and Christian. I felt drawn to Elizabeth and her problems and needs. I could see myself in her somewhat, I don't have all the same problems but I could see similarities in my life and hers. I can't wait to share this book with everyone I know. It makes me want to shout from the roof tops!

I feel the need in my own life for a prayer change and I know anyone who reads this book will be changed. Read this and then give your copy to a friend. Let's start a prayer revival!
