Very handy reference tool for writing

I've owned this book for about ten years and moved it with me whenever I get a new technical writing assignment. It has saved my writing hide with the subject matter experts numerous times! It shows the most common errors made in English usage in an easy-to-understand manner. I had trouble with misplaced modifiers and "like" as opposed to "such as" for years. This book helped me learn which way is correct usage!
I like the straighforward and often humorous style. I'd love to see future editions.

Insightful, Handy, and Concise Guide to avoiding

common grammatical and word meaning errors in English. Learn to use proper English. Useful for speakers as well as writers. A good example is the reflexive pronoun "myself". Do you know the proper usage of this word? What about when to use "may" versus "might"? If not, this book is a good start. I think most people could benefit from this book. The problem with errors in speech is that we unaware we are making them and often repeat them. Others, however, may pick up on our mistakes. Also, this book is concise and a fairly quick read.

difficult to read

This does have great tips on grammar; however, some of the book is definitely outdated. Also, it seems to me that this type of book would be written primarily for those of us who aren't naturally adept in English usage -- if that is the case, I think the author should remember the KISS rule (Keep it simple, stupid) and avoid sentences like this one in chapter 13: "A false comparison is one wherein a comparative or a superlative degree construction is used without a clearly stated basis for the comparison..." . Who needs to muddle through sentences like that! Otherwise, though, this book can be very helpful.

Everything you need to know to tell flannel board stories.

I train childcare teachers and use this book when teaching how to tell flannel board stories. The author gives guidelines for using the flannel board story with different age groups. A total of 50+ stories, poems, and songs are included, some appropriate for the younger child, some for ages five and older. The selection is varied, including familiar stories such as "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "The Three Pigs". Also included are folktales which are less familiar but equally wonderful. For each story, the author shares special directions for using the flannel board characters and how to include the children in the telling of that story. For me, a special feature of this book are the patterns for the characters--they are large, clear, and easy to duplicate.

As a volunteer storyteller for our local library's storytime, I have recently looked through this book and found it to be a superb addition to our resource section. Here are 4 reasons I have found this book to be helpful enough to own my own copy. 1. It is instantly useable, no need to tweak and edit the stories. 2. The stories lend themselves to puppets as well. 3. The stories and rhymes are simple and easy to use. 4. The book itself is nicely organized.

Christmas gifts for the grandchildren...

I purchased The Flannel Board Storytelling Book as the first step in making flannel board stories for my grandchildren. I am very pleased with this purchase. The figures are simple. Though preparation of the stories will be time-consuming, I believe first teaching the stories, then letting my grandchildren teach me will be well worth the price I paid for this book. It is a collection of both well-loved stories from my childhood, and many others that teach values and offer the opportunity to talk about life situations. I'm excited for Christmas. R ALLEN

Jobinesh Purushothaman works with Oracle as a consulting solutions architect. Overall good coverage of JAX-RS using the Jersey reference implementation

Much improved from the 1st edition. Strange that the 1st edition author was not involved with this edition. Overall good coverage of JAX-RS using the Jersey reference implementation. Good coverage on JSON processing using Jackson and GSON (missing Moxy though). My issue is the use of Netbeans instead of Eclipse which is more widely used. Also missing coverage of server side Oauth security. These issues made me drop one star from this otherwise great book on REST.

REST APIs wonderfully explained, easy to understand, worth trying !!

This is one of the good book available in the market today to begin your journey with REST API development using Java. Chapter 1, introduces you to basics of RESTful web APIs. Chapter 2, teaches you JSON and JSON parsers. The first two chapters are introductory and easy to follow. You may truly enjoy these chapters if you are new to REST. Chapter 3 , introduces you to JAX-RS and Chapter 4 takes you to advanced topics in JAX-RS. Chapter 5, takes you through some of the Jersey offering which you may find very useful while dealing with many real life use cases. Chapter 6 introduces you to security - not in depth, however basics are covered very nicely. Chapter 7 teaches common formats used for Description and Discovery of RESTful Web Services. I'm not aware of any other book on Java REST API covers this topic. Chapter 8 gives you some useful tips for designing REST API- another well written chapter. You will also find downloadable code samples for each chapter in the Packt Pub site, which makes your life easier while learning complex topics such as building custom entity types. Overall this is great asset for anyone who want to learn(beginner or intermediate) RESTful web API development using JAX-RS.

The purpose of this book is to present a new mechanistic theory of mutation-driven evolution based on recent advances in genomics and evolutionary developmental biology. The theory asserts, perhaps somewhat controversially, that the driving force behind evolution is mutation, with natural selection being of only secondary importance. The word 'mutation' is used to describe any kind of change in DNA such as nucleotide substitution, gene duplication/deletion, chromosomal change, and genome duplication. A brief history of the principal evolutionary theories (Darwinism, mutationism, neo-Darwinism, and neo-mutationism) that preceded the theory of mutation-driven evolution is also presented in the context of the last 150 years of research. However, the core of the book is concerned with recent studies of genomics and the molecular basis of phenotypic evolution, and their relevance to mutation-driven evolution. In contrast to neo-Darwinism, mutation-driven evolution is capable of explaining real examples of evolution such as the evolution of olfactory receptors, sex-determination in animals, and the general scheme of hybrid sterility. In this sense the theory proposed is more realistic than its predecessors, and gives a more logical explanation of various evolutionary events.

Mutation-Driven Evolution is suitable for graduate level students as well as professional researchers (both empiricists and theoreticians) in the fields of molecular evolution and population genetics. It assumes that the readers are acquainted with basic knowledge of genetics and molecular biology.

About the Author

Masatoshi Nei is a molecular evolutionary geneticist and has developed many statistical methods that are widely used for evolutionary studies at present. He has also studied human evolution and evolution of multigene families, immune systems genes, sensory receptor genes, etc. Masatoshi Nei is currently Evan Pugh Professor of Biology at the Pennsylvania State University and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He received numerous Awards including the International Prize for Biology from Japan and the Thomas Morgan Medal from the Genetics Society of America. Nei is a co-founder of the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution and served as President of the Society for the Study of Molecular Biology and Evolution and American Genetic Association.

A Must Read for Anyone Interested in Evolutionary Biology

Every so often, a new idea is put forth to explain the underlying causes of evolution. Mostly, these ideas are not very earth-shattering, and typically they are very specific and applicable only to the problem at hand. The ideas put forth in this book are quite the opposite: together they form the basis of a new theory of mutation-driven evolution that eloquently explains “real examples”. If you want to be challenged to think about the underlying causes of evolution, and not simply be content to be spoon-fed dogma that has pervaded the literature, then this book is a must read for you. It flows well, and the examples provided are clearly and concisely explained. It will be of great value to graduate students and established researchers, but even those who have only taken undergraduate courses in evolutionary biology will appreciate this book. If you want to gain a true appreciation for how evolution “works”, then I highly recommend you buy and read this book.

How adaptive evolution works

The author is one of the major figures in the theory and analysis of molecular evolution of the last half of the 20th century. This book reflects his remarkable memory of that history and its major ideas about how complex adaptive traits evolve. Nei challenges the often automatic assumption that such traits are due to `selection' rather than mutation. The prevailing idea has been that there's always enough standing variation for selection to screen to enable new adaptations to occur. But Nei explains his challenge to that idea, that new adaptations for complex traits must await `constraint breaking' mutations that enable new pathways out of entrenched developmental systems. He also provides a more fluid view of species' options, a challenge to the view that they are all very tightly fitted, and adaptively restricted, to highly specialized niches. These ideas in various forms can be found in the biological literature, but not as cohesively argued as a general theory about the nature of adaptive evolution. The ideas deserve both the airing Nei gives them and the debate that may follow by those who would challenge them.

Possibly overstated - but great! Textbooks must change.

Nei begins his Chapter 6 by saying: "In the study of evolution the following question is often asked: what is the relative importance of mutation and natural selection? In my view this is not an appropriate question, because the roles of mutation and selection are qualitatively different."

However, the theme of his book is that mutation is primary, although he says at one point that "Of course, this does not mean that natural selection is unimportant".

His arguments are strong, and textbooks must change. But neo-Darwinian concepts still have some relevance.

After a major meteor strike, intense selection occurred before "lucky" new mutations could make a difference. The same was probably true for lesser catastrophes, if not too local or transitory.

Whenever the environment changes quickly, the first response is probably via selection, and mutations that eliminate functions not needed in the new environment. Favorable new mutations have low probability, and therefore come later. This may apply to Founders, if they are poorly adapted to their new environment but have little competition, except from each other. Not every fish that enters a cave survives to breed!

Favorable mutations can upset stability. Is this relevant for punctuated equilibrium (not mentioned in his index)?

One of the best series ever!

The idea behind Endworld has encouraged many more titles such as the book Swan Song and even the movie The Day After. It is an interesting read that deals with a group of people living in a very fictional post apocalyptic future. A future that has mutants, mutated humans, a crazed Russian army along with tons of other interesting hurdles they must cross in order to stay alive. It has rich detailed characters, interesting action and some nice jokes. While it is not Shakespeare as far as the writing is concerned, it is fast paced and can keep you interested. Do not read this series if you are going to worry about details and unrealistic action. This book is in the sci-fi area for a reason. I recommend the first one to everyone I know, for the simple fact it is worth the time to look it over

Action in the post-WWIII world

This is the 1st I've read by Robhbins and I intend to be back for more. It's action in postwar Minnesota as Blade, Geronimo and Hickock undertake a mission to find out what else is left outside their compound. Great touches abound-killer mutant squirrels, gladiatorlike combat with Wolverines and living killer clouds all make the world of Blade a living hell. In a surprising twist, the heroes are given a mission early on and by the end of this actionfest, they haven't even started the mission; thus promising plenty of action to come. Nice touch.

One of the best adventure scfi.books I've ever read,and I collect this series,and try to get all of the ones that follow in it. This one kept me on the edge of my seat,and couldn't put it down to do anything till I'd finished. One of the things I like about all of them is that they fasten on to you from the minute you pick them up till you finish,and then you hunt everywhere just to get the next one;as you don't want to miss a single thing that will happen to the FamilY! Please let the author know that they are a well loved books,and that his fan's would like more of them!
