About the Author

Rafael C. Gonzalez received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Miami in 1965 and the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1967 and 1970, respectively. He joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) in 1970, where he became Associate Professor in 1973, Professor in 1978, and Distinguished Service Professor in 1984. He served as Chairman of the department from 1994 through 1997. He is currently a Professor Emeritus at UTK.

Gonzalez is the founder of the Image & Pattern Analysis Laboratory and the Robotics & Computer Vision Laboratory at the University of Tennessee. He also founded Perceptics Corporation in 1982 and was its president until 1992. The last three years of this period were spent under a full-time employment contract with Westinghouse Corporation, who acquired the company in 1989.

Under his direction, Perceptics became highly successful in image processing, computer vision, and laser disk storage technology. In its initial ten years, Perceptics introduced a series of innovative products, including: The world's first commercially-available computer vision system for automatically reading the license plate on moving vehicles; a series of large-scale image processing and archiving systems used by the U.S. Navy at six different manufacturing sites throughout the country to inspect the rocket motors of missiles in the Trident II Submarine Program; the market leading family of imaging boards for advanced Macintosh computers; and a line of trillion-byte laser disk products.

He is a frequent consultant to industry and government in the areas of pattern recognition, image processing, and machine learning. His academic honors for work in these fields include the 1977 UTK College of Engineering Faculty Achievement Award; the 1978 UTK Chancellor's Research Scholar Award; the 1980 Magnavox Engineering Professor Award; and the 1980 M.E. Brooks Distinguished Professor Award. In 1981 he became an IBM Professor at the University of Tennessee and in 1984 he was named a Distinguished Service Professor there. He was awarded a Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Miami in 1985, the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award in 1986, and the University of Tennessee's Nathan W. Dougherty Award for Excellence in Engineering in 1992.

Honors for industrial accomplishment include the 1987 IEEE Outstanding Engineer Award for Commercial Development in Tennessee; the 1988 Albert Rose Nat'l Award for Excellence in Commercial Image Processing; the 1989 B. Otto Wheeley Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer; the 1989 Coopers and Lybrand Entrepreneur of the Year Award; the 1992 IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award; and the 1993 Automated Imaging Association National Award for Technology Development.

Gonzalez is author or co-author of over 100 technical articles, two edited books, and four textbooks in the fields of pattern recognition, image processing and robotics. His books are used in over 500 universities and research institutions throughout the world. He is listed in the prestigious Marquis Who's Who in America, Marquis Who's Who in Engineering, Marquis Who's Who in the World, and in 10 other national and international biographical citations. He ii the co-holder of two U.S. Patents, and has been an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, and the International Journal of Computer and Information Sciences. He is a member of numerous professional and honorary societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kapp Nu, and Sigma Xi. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

 

Richard E. Woods earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His professional experiences range from entrepreneurial to the more traditional academic, consulting; governmental, and industrial pursuits. Most recently, he founded MedData Interactive, a high technology company specializing in the development of hand-held computer systems for medical applications. He was also a founder and Vice President of Perceptics Corporation, where he was responsible for the development of many of the company's quantitative image analysis and autonomous decision making products.

Prior to Perceptics and MedData, Dr. Woods was an Assistant Professor off Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee: and prior to that, a computer applications engineer at Union Carbide Corporation. As a consultant, he has been involved in the development of a number of special-purpose digital processors for a variety of space and military agencies, including NASA, the Ballistic Missile Systems Command, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Dr. Woods has published numerous articles related to digital signal processing and is a member of several professional societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and the IEEE. In 1986, he was recognized as a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus of the University of Tennessee.

Understood quite a lot...

This is a good introduction to image processing.
The first chapters introduce the readers to the fundamentals of human vision and how the brain processes light, contrast and color. The examples are clear and understandable.
As the book progresses, the subjects become more complex and mathematically-oriented. I found that I could follow up with those topics in which I had prior background, like intensity transformations, spatial filtering, filtering in the frequency domain, color image processing, image compression and image segmentation. In these topics I understood most of what they were explaining, except maybe the last pages of each chapter.
When it came to chapters where I was weaker or not familiar at all, I have to admit that I was able to keep up only with the first pages of each one. More specifically: Wavelets and multithreshold processing, morphological image processing, representation, fuzzy logic and object recognition. These chapters became muddy very quickly, and I only got a general feeling about what they were explaining.
Maybe someone with an electrical engineering background (myself being mechanical/software) would understand better the advanced topics.
I plan to read them again once I have a practical need or use for those areas.
The book does not contain code samples but it has quite a lot of practical use examples with pictures.
In summary, I understood roughly 65% of the book and would recommend it to anyone who needs a better understanding of image processing.

The best in the field

Gonzalez & Woods (3rd ed) is not only the best single reference in the field of image processing, but it is also one of the best technical books I ever read, in any field. Text and examples are clear, mathematics is at the right level to be precise, formal and understandable as well. You'll learn a lot about many things in this book.

Even better than the first edition

This book is a wonderful read about image processing. Having read most of the 1st edition (yes I'm reading all of the 3rd), I can say that this 3rd edition is larger (yet not insurmountable) with more examples, explanations, mathematical development and new material. I'm currently in the chapter about frequency domain processing and must say that the previous chapter about spatial domain processing is more robust, even now including a good introduction to fuzzy logic. Anyhow, with a good background in applied math and Matlab programming, this material is easy reading for me, but should also be accessible enough for anyone with a general technical background.

Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)

About the Author
Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California dance band. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings.

Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater.

He was introduced to the world of children’s literature when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: "I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!"

Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear named Corduroy.

Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popular books for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low.

Everyone should know this lovely book!

Cordoroy is the perfect children's book. It is a gentle, sweet tale of a little bear in cordoroy overalls waiting to be purchased in a department store. A real little girl sees him and falls in love with him, but her mother says she doesn't have money to buy him and he's missing a button. After the store closes, all the toys with faces close their eyes except Cordoroy. Instead, he travels the department store searching for a button because he didn't know he was not perfect. He does not solve his problem. Cordoroy is back on the toy shelf the next morning. The little girl, Lisa returns to buy him. She takes him home, sews on a button, and provides him with his own little bed right beside hers. "I've always wanted a friend!" he says. This beautifully illustrated book has a simple text and huge appeal to anyone with a heart.

Collector's item/memorabilia for adults, pages upside down

I purchased this for my son, but I'm going to get another copy that ISN'T the anniversary addition. This version contains eight pages of information about the earlier version of the book, letters between the author and publisher, etc. This sort of stuff is more for those of us who remember the book from our childhoods than it is for the kids themselves.

Curiously, the first four pages of my copy of the book are bound in upside-down. Does anyone else have this in theirs? I might have a real collector's item indeed...

As for the story itself, it's a five-star kid's story. Wonderful. But if you are buying it for your kids, I'd get the other version.

Sweet, sweet story.

This sweet bear has been around for several generations. Living in a department store, Corduroy wanders off for the night. Up the escalator onto the floor with the beds and the lamps. Aha, he needs a new button to replace the lost button on his corduroy overalls. He pulls and pulls a button from a mattress, creating quite a racket in the process. The night watchman comes to investigate and finds the bear hiding under a blanket. The nightwatchman carries Corduroy down the escalator and places him back on the shelf. You see, the little girl's mother told Lisa that she did not want Corduroy because he had was missing a button. The following day Lisa returns with her saved piggy bank money, buys the bear and takes him home to his very own bedroom. This book is incredibly sweet and is appropriate for 2 years old and older. What's more, FAO Schwartz actually sells a Corduroy bear. What a treat. A wonderful gift for a birthday or holiday. Highly, highly recommended.

When I volunteered to write a book review in the field of bioinformatics, I couldn't exactly shop at the local bookstore. Being both intimidated and in a big hurry, I scanned Amazon's choices and I chose the one that sounded easiest: Understanding Bioinformatics, a recent paperback written by Marketa Zvelebil and Jeremy O. Baum. The title reminded me of Essentials of Molecular Biology by David Freifelder, the 1985 condensation with pretty pictures for budding biotech patent attorneys whose college papers were typed on an actual typewriter. However, shopping online and taking the easy route is risky; too many karmic variables. It turns out that the book weighs about four pounds; and even though it has plenty of pictures, it also has plenty of calculus.

Even so, for those of you who are fairly up-to-date on this subject, you will find this book comprehensive and current. It is loaded with information, and seems to cater to someone who would sit down at a computer with the book on the edge of her desk, picking through for pointers. Anyone who masters this text can, without cracking even a small smile, consider himself an expert on the subject.

Understanding Bioinformatics is, however, written for a variety of audiences, with each chapter formatted such that a reader can choose how technical to get. For right-brainers, the prose is easy to read and the graphics are great for memory retention. The book ramps up from fairly easy to extremely technical quickly but smoothly, with an increasing need for calculus as the book progresses. I will admit that the later chapters were slow-going. However, the authors are superb communicators and offered the information such that the concepts are attainable, even to someone who graduated in 1991, practiced biotech patent law for ten years, took a detour to make artisan cheese, and recently rejoined the lawyer game. In other words, no matter what your technical background, this book is written in a style that makes the basic topics simple, and the difficult topics relatively easy. Even though the authors mine the depths of bioinformatics, they never get distracted or off-course. This text is probably the only one you would need on the subject, with the next step being journal articles, conferences, or discussions with other bioinformatics enthusiasts.

For left brainers, there is plenty of math in this book. To be honest, I flashed the equations around my office and home, just to prove that my job is really, really hard. People were suitably impressed. I'm not sure that the authors had "fodder for patent lawyers to show off to immigration lawyers" as a goal when writing it, but I can vouch that it is a decent enough reason to buy the book.

The authors assume a college level understanding of molecular biology, evolutionary biology and genomics, but they are kind enough to give gentle reminders if you need a refresher. Happily, interesting pieces of trivia are sprinkled throughout, in separate, somewhat stylish boxes. The glossary is adequate. The index is five pages, but the subjects are printed in a tiny font, making it difficult to read. The small font size in an informatics book made me snicker, but just a bit.

My favorite part of this book is that the authors admit that you are a reader of the book, and that you have expectations and desires. For instance, at the beginning of each chapter, the authors promise that after you read the chapter, you should be able to do and know certain things. Upon reading Chapter 11, you should be able to "discuss the statistical scoring of patterns." With whom, I wonder. But, their unending confidence in my abilities encouraged me to give each new chapter a try.

Another fantastic feature is the "Mind Map," a diagram at the beginning of each chapter, with color-coded ideas that make literal line connections between concepts. I loved those Mind Maps! I also got a kick out of the "Flow Diagrams" that they throw in with the start of new concepts within the chapters. The Flow Diagrams tell you, for instance, "The key concept introduced in this section is that multiple sequence alignments can be produced by a variety of closely related techniques, which are based on the pairwise sequence alignment methods." In other words, if you don't understand the sentence in the Flow Diagram, make sure you read the section, or skip it, if you do.

If you have read this far, you are obviously genuinely interested in bioinformatics, so I will give you the details.

Part 1 is Background Basics. Chapters 1 and 2 cover molecular biology basics, and are nice to have in the book, but most biotech patent lawyers already know this stuff. Every now and then, the authors remind the reader that science is science, and that you should not assume that things are really as you have been taught. For instance, Box 1.2 header screams: "Things are usually not that simple!" and strongly warns the reader not to assume that everyone agrees what the definition of a gene is. Refreshing, really. Chapter 3 covers database basics, and I was able to understand it even though I do not consider myself a computer person. For those of you who are computer people, this is stuff that you would know off the top of your head, and would not bother reading. The authors acknowledge that the first three chapters are warm-ups, and not intended to be the way you learn this information if you are serious about it, and offer further reading suggestions. Plus, they throw in several appendices for good measure, on subjects such as: probability, information, and Bayesian analysis; molecular energy functions; and function optimization.

Part 2 is Sequence Alignments. Chapter 4 discusses producing and analyzing sequence alignments, and covers the basics, in a regimented, but conversational, manner. Biotech patent attorneys should definitely know this information, and the authors deliver it painlessly. Chapters 5 and 6 dig deeper into alignments, including how to do multiple sequence alignments, as well as presentation and critical analysis of the results.

Chapter 7 kicks off Part 3, on Evolutionary Processes, with phylogenetic tree reconstruction and some information on molecular evolution. Along with Chapter 8, which teaches specifically how to build phylogenetic trees, this section strikes me as most often applicable to scholarly endeavors. Even so, I enjoyed it immensely. One reason to read this chapter is to learn how each type of tree is flawed in its own way, so that you stop and consider what you are seeing, for instance, in an invention disclosure.

Part 4 is Genome Characteristics, with Chapter 9 covering gene prediction, promoter and splice site detection, and statistical analysis. Chapter 10 compares various computer programs for gene detection, and provides tips for predicting eukaryotic gene signals and exon/intron structure. The authors once again warn readers against relying too heavily on the technology and concepts of the day, and remind scientists to question their methods and delivery of results. This theme underscores the fluidity of bioinformatics, and, for patent attorneys, the need to know what you are talking about when writing a specification or arguing a motion.

Part 5 deals well with Secondary Structures, including, in Chapter 11, laying out the types of prediction methods, making sure the reader knows the tools available and ways to use them, and following up with statistical analysis and caveats. Prediction of transmembrane protein structure is also reviewed, including a selection of prediction programs for helices, and when to choose which program or technique. This chapter also provides coil and RNA secondary structure prediction tools and considerations. Chapter 12, Predicting Secondary Structure, has a lot of calculus and is very intimidating if you thought you would actually need to prove mathematically that, as Box 12.1 states, "Neural networks must be parameterized by training before use for prediction." If you stick to the text and the figures, however, most of the concepts and vocabulary are attainable to even the oldest and slowest among us. Moreover, if you ever need to know the math details, this is the text you need by your side.

Part 6, Tertiary Structure takes Part 5 to another dimension and complexity. I have to say that anyone who can teach this Part is Nobel Prize material. My brain chugged through it the way my Chevy Vega took to the Bloomington hills, slowly but surely. I mostly credit the authors for their patience and understanding in my conquering the material, but Starbucks certainly contributed. Chapter 13 digs deep into potential energy functions and force fields, obtaining a structure by threading, principles of homology modeling, steps in homology modeling, automated homology modeling, and then, to give you a break, provides a concrete example of the PI3 Kinase p110á. Chapter 14, Analyzing Structure-Function Relationships, an inherently interesting subject to me (no kidding), was no disappointment, although I was surprised and reluctantly happy to find information that I didn't know. There are more programs out there than I previously thought, and the authors describe each with precision and clarity.

Part 7, Cells and Organisms, covers Proteome and Gene Expression Analysis (Chapter 15) and Clustering Methods and Statistics (Chapter 16), and Systems Biology (Chapter 17) are chunky, but again, the concepts are there, and you can use the text on many different levels. If you are a computer programmer, you would do well to check out the problems encountered in spot detection on 2D gels, and how mass spectrometry analysis of a 2D gel increases reliability of the analysis. Over and over, I was impressed at the integration of the biology, math and graphic expression of data and results. The authors have a gift for communicating the importance of, and methods for, communication. This text provides a common vocabulary for biologists and computer programmers to speak to each other, even though they may be too shy to do it.

All in all, despite my initial horror when I realized that this review would take more than one unbillable hour, I am glad I did it. I was happy to find that I knew more than I thought I did, and the authors' confidence-building tone and presentation drove me through the things I didn't. Plus, it is oddly satisfying to criticize a woman and a man who are absolute, no-doubt-about-it geniuses. In sum: I recommend it - great book! And now that I have it on my shelf, I feel, and more importantly, look, smarter.

The material covered in this book in comprehensive and explained in good detail. I am very happy to have purchased and read through much of this book. The reading is not as much fun as reading a biology book and I had the benefit of being pushed to do the reading in the form of reading assignments in class. I am thankful to have been pushed to do this reading as the information content of the book is excellent. But had I not been motivated by class assignments, I would have read much slower and covered much less material. I am thankful to to have learned what I have learned from this book. It was all new to me. Excellent book. A little bit of a tough read.

He was never comfortable being punished or rewarded by teachers, and drifted through school, the archetype of the wanderer, studying religion and philosophy, the arts and the media, world politics and the ancient occult. You can see all of this reflected in his writing, but there is something more, something difficult to describe or define. It is at once a heavy gravitas that infuses his verse, and a blinding luminescence of faith in something he has found, within himself, in his wanderings. This is what he brings, and hopes to share with us. The ability to transform the weight of the world into energy. The more you doubt this young man, the more you will see as he sees all things.

A Triumph!

Are you tired of books with coherent writing, factual content and proper arrangement? Are you looking for over 500 pages of the insane ramblings of a schizophrenic so high on LSD he thinks he's found God? Do you want to read a book by a man who claims to be the last High Priest because he dropped 12 tabs and watched The Blair Witch Project? Then this book is for you! Includes loads of handwritten diagrams that explain nothing and plenty of fake maths, lofty arrogant and farcical claims by the author and sentences that run on much much longer than this one ever could. Also the writing is really bad and there's a lot of spelling mistakes.

A nice overview of a complex art

A good book for someone with no bonsai experience. The authors keep the basics of bonsai simple and point the novice in the right direction. Although it would be a good reference to have handy while attempting that first Juniper, the beginner would do well to read other books before going further.

As i have always been facinated with bonsai , i have never reaaly got into it. I recently purchased a bonsai fig and did,nt have a clue how to look after it . Practical - Could Use More Detail

The book is a much-needed overview of 17025 and I recommend it for persons beginning conformance to this standard. It does not give an explanation for each requirement. For example, all of Clause 5.5, Equipment, is covered in nine pages, however, the chapter does contain a discussion of the goals of 5.5. and a summary of the sub-requirements.

Extremely helpful - great value added!

This exactly what I've been looking for to help my company realize the benefits of implementing ISO/IEC 17025 and to help us best implement the management system. It's the only truly useful book that I've seen on this standard (there may be others - I just haven't seen them yet). The style of presentation reminds me a lot of ISO 9001:2008 Explained, which I've used as a valued resource for many years. The only suggestion I would make for improvement would be if the author could actually include the ISO/IEC 17025 clauses verbatim at the start of each section of his book, rather than just summarize them so that the reader has to flip back and forth between the book and the standard.

The author summarizes every section of the standard, in order, with down-to-earth explanations of what the requirements really mean. He does a very effective job of tranlating the "standards-speak" into practical, easily understandable language. But the real value added comes with the author's suggestions for implementation that go beyond the stiffness (and sometimes density) of the standard to the intent of the standard and the benefits to a company for implementing best practices. The book explains both how to meet the requirements of the standard and the reasons why these requirements are beneficial to a test and calibration lab. He includes many useful samples of forms, procedures, reports and quality tools that illustrate the standard and its implementation. There are large sections on CAPA, continual improvement, measurement uncertainty, traceability and other helpful subjects. One of my favorite features are the "common audit questions" sections.

A powerful addition to my Quality library. Thank you for this much needed book, Bob!

A must for anyone going after ISO accreditation

Well written and to the point. Very much worth the cost for the value that this book brings to a company going after ISO accrditation. I have actually seen Bob in action as an auditor and he has probably one of the best grasps of what ISO is going after. As this is relatively short and to the point you can have your entire staff read and be well prepared for an auditor. Great training material.

What to look for, not what to do.

Before anyone gets defensive, I think Mike Holmes is one of the greatest living humans on Earth. I love his shows and magazine. I thought I'd love this book- but I was very disappointed.

I guess I expected more. If you are a hands-off homeowner (or future homeowner) who is buying a house or considering hiring a contrator to do a job on your house, this book is for you! This book will help you identify potential problems with your structure or with the people you intend to hire. Mike recommends certain materials and lets you know what to look out for.

Though, that's it. If you watch the show, you already know most of this. But I'm not the kind of guy who farms this stuff out. I do it myself- framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, whatever. I'm certainly not a professional and I'm sure I'm not "doing it (completely) right." I was hoping that this book would show me how to make it right. For example, I'm re-doing my bathroom. There's little to nothing about venting the drain pipes. Yeah, it says that if you have xyz problem, there's an issue with venting. But it doesn't tell you the proper way to vent anything- just to call a pro.

Sorry, Mike. Teach me how to do it, not how to pay someone to do it!

good overview of how to design and contractor selection - not DIY

I like Holmes TV shows, so i got this book. this is well written overview of the things to look for in contracting the remodel - i was more interested in the DIY details, but it's not Holmes fault that he wrote the book that he wanted to write rather than the one i wanted to read. Even though it's short on DIY details, it's still an interesting read.

About the Author
Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and holder of the Richard W. and Janis H. Furst Endowed Chair in Finance at the University of Kentucky. He has a longstanding interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. 

Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics.  A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals.  He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac.  He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randolph W.Westerfield is Dean Emeritus of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and is the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and a member of the finance faculty for 20 years.

Very deceived. I wish I could have my money back. I rented this book through Amazon Kindle thinking I was going to get an Access code because all rentals give Access codes, but no Acess code was given. If you need this book for "reading on the go", it is excellent. But if you're a student that needs an Access code, don't get it.
