You Will Know Me: A Novel, by Megan Abbott

The audacious new novel about family and ambition from "one of the best living mystery writers" (Grantland) and bestselling, award-winning author of The Fever, Megan Abbott.

How far will you go to achieve a dream? That's the question a celebrated coach poses to Katie and Eric Knox after he sees their daughter Devon, a gymnastics prodigy and Olympic hopeful, compete. For the Knoxes there are no limits--until a violent death rocks their close-knit gymnastics community and everything they have worked so hard for is suddenly at risk.

As rumors swirl among the other parents, Katie tries frantically to hold her family together while also finding herself irresistibly drawn to the crime itself. What she uncovers--about her daughter's fears, her own marriage, and herself--forces Katie to consider whether there's any price she isn't willing to pay to achieve Devon's dream.

From a writer with "exceptional gifts for making nerves jangle and skin crawl" (Janet Maslin), You Will Know Me is a breathless rollercoaster of a novel about the desperate limits of parental sacrifice, furtive desire, and the staggering force of ambition.

Incisive look into a distorted world.
By Susan K. Noel
This is a good novel -- NOT brilliant as sometimes described. It's a good character study of the kind of all-encompassing obsession and distortion in an ordinary family where one memory has an extraordinary gift. It could well influence the way you watch the Olympic gymnastics in the future.
The so-called "plot twists" were, for me, telegraphed almost from the beginning. But that's not really the point of the novel. It's incorrect to see it as a mystery or a page turner. I actually wish that the author had simply focused on the story of the family and the one gifted child, and what that does to a family. The type of distortions and dangers described here, I get the feeling, are much more common in the "real world" than we might suspect. Although one of the points of this novel is that there's very little "real world" involved in world class gymnastics (and I would add, any other world where gifted children live their whole lives in competition with others like themselves.)

So wish it were better
By Claire Williams
How I wish Megan Abbott could write another novel like her class DARE ME. Although her writing is so captivating, the story was unbelievable. There was no way this young gymast could find the time to do what happens in the novel. No one is really that interesting and the moms are all bitcches. Abbott needs to slow down and write a novel worthy of her great talents.

Not Sure What the Uproar's About
By Suzanne
Hmmm. A great review in the NYTimes made me get this book, though it isn't my usual type. And there was some good writing. The promise of an intriguing plot amidst the backdrop of high stakes gymnastics. And yet there's so amateurish about it, overblown language ("obscurely primitive" to describe a character's expression? "Pink" used way too often to describe young gymnasts. Way too many "queasy" moments...) sooooo much gratuitous drinking and old married hot sex with a husband who, it we are constantly reminded, didn't really WANT the star gymnast daughter from the get-go.. But mostly it was the main character, Katie, who did me in: caught up in the drama around competitive gymnastics, and yet snobbish toward the "booster" moms. A blind ditzy fool about her "handsome" husband, who just seemed like a manipulative Svengali dad to me. I get that the younger sibling might be ignored in the face of the sister's stardom, but really Katie's constant abandonment of him--it just made me NOT CARE what happened to this woman. And everyone, even the 7 yr olds, even the so called happily married mid lifers--gaga over the ripple-ab'ed 20 year old. Ew. It all felt too shallow and boring to be engaging. Probably the last thriller I'll read for a while (though really, all great books are thrillers, I'll stay clear of those written expressly to supposedly, uh, keep us guessing).

Twenty-five years later, she still feels like she’s falling short of expectations. Fortunately, her faith and her friends in the small, rural North Carolina town of Cedar Branch keep her strong.

After her best friend’s politically powerful father dies, Liz stumbles upon secrets from the past that threaten to unravel the current harmony in Cedar Branch, a town with a history of racial tension. As she researches more and eavesdrops on gossip at the Quaker Café, where everyone meets each morning, Liz soon discovers the truth about an injustice that she cannot reveal to anyone—not even her husband.

Surrounded by a cast of richly drawn Southern characters, Liz learns that even good people can make bad choices. Now, she must decide whether she has the strength to bring a past wrong to light, despite the consequences.

Review

“A Southern charm all its own…Remmes’s story will have readers intrigued in part because much of her tale surrounds the Quaker beliefs in a modern-day world. She presents her characters in life’s funniest yet vulnerable situations, and allows them to work through their challenges page by colorful page.” —Michele Howe, Bookreporter.com

“For those who love a terrific Southern story with fascinating characters and a genuine sense of place, this book is a must.” —Beth Hoffman, New York Times bestselling author of Looking for Me and Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

“Be prepared to laugh, cry, and gasp as you read Brenda Bevan Remmes’s The Quaker Café, an intriguing story whose unique cast of characters with long-held secrets is fractured, then put back together again, piece by healing piece.” —Julie Kibler, bestselling author of Calling Me Home

“While Remmes explores the South of this time and place with affection, tolerance, and a sense of humor, she also shows us the kind of courage it takes to make a difference in our little slices of the world.” —Kathryn E. Lovatt, SC Arts Commission 2013 Prose Fellow, 2012 and 2013 winner of Press 53 Open Award for short fiction

“The Quaker Café tells an engrossing story with humor and sympathy for the people on both sides of a difficult situation.” —Katherine Mccaughan, award-winning author of Natasha Lands Down Under

“A story tinged with just the right Southern sound and sensibility…told with layers of laughter and love and lumps in the throat.” —Marti Healy, author of The Rhythm of Selby

“Cedar Branch could represent any number of places below the Mason-Dixon, each and every one of them offering their own closely-related brand of politics and deference to family lineage.” —Sandy Richardson, author of The Girl Who Ate Chicken Feet

“This is a captivating and touching novel about the intersections of race, class, religion, and ethics in small town North Carolina in the early 1990’s. Remmes neither avoids the really tough questions, nor offers simplistic solutions. The result is a very well-written story with a number of important surprises.” —J. Stephen Rhodes, author of What Might Not Be

The Quaker Cafe has it all: fascinating plot, engaging characters and timely themes
By George Raftelis
The Quaker Cafe stimulates the fiction reader’s interest from numerous perspectives.

First, The Quaker Cafe develops a compelling plot that unfolds in a small town setting in North Carolina where the Quaker theme is always present. The book was educational in that I learned a lot about the Quaker faith and their style. In addition, I basked in my journey through the lives and backgrounds of different characters, the various scenes in the story, and the multiple themes reflected in the book. I also enjoyed how the author integrates humor into a book with clever mysteries and fascinating twists and turns. I found myself laughing out loud many times!

Another one of The Quaker Café’s strong points is the development of its characters. Many of the names are ingenious; their different levels of complexity, uniqueness and depth are intriguing; and their interaction and dialog are fascinating. From Grandma and Grandpa Hoole, to Judge and Maggy Kendall, to Liz and Chase, to Miss Ellie, to Frogbelly, to Luanne and Issac, etc., each character is unique and reflects a complex person for the reader to get to know and enjoy. As I read, the characters jumped off the pages!

Probably one the most interesting attributes of the book is how the author reflects life challenges and themes: racism, faith and religion, honesty and dishonesty, family, love, dying, lust, secrecy, and human frailty. I found myself evaluating these themes in some aspect of my life. Specifically, the book caused me to reflect on life as it really is, and how society's standards are applied in different situations (race relations, religion, family relationships, caring for people who are dying, etc.).

I strongly recommend the book to a variety of audiences. To the light hearted reader, to the reader seeking answers to the complexities of life, or to the reader that just wants to be entertained.

Just Finished - Glad I Read It
By Jim V
I'm a big fan of entering other cultures - and for this Midwestern-raised, adopted New Englander, the South is another culture. Not to mention the world of contemporary Quakerism. The Quaker Café is a joyful read with a carefully crafted story that ends from the heart. It rings true. Read and enjoy!

Absolutely Loved this Book!
By Nina J. Tomasieski
This is a book where the characters will remain with you long after the last chapter - one where you curl up and so love the characters that when you must stop reading, they stay in your thoughts so that picking up the book again is such a reward just to get back into the story. I will not give away the plot, but I can say this book is well-written, keeps moving, and has some really good laughs along the way. Also, I have read many books with Amish influence and this is the first dealing with the Quaker religion. Learned a few things, also, so it’s a win-win book for me. I hope there is a sequel.

The Downfall of Money: Germany's Hyperinflation and the Destruction of the Middle Class, by Frederick Taylor

A hundred years ago, many theorists believed--just as they did at the beginning of our twenty-first century--that the world had reached a state of economic perfection, a never before seen human interdependence that would lead to universal growth and prosperity. Then, as now, the German mark was one of the most trusted currencies in the world. Yet the early years of the Weimar Republic in Germany witnessed the most calamitous meltdown of a developed economy in modern times. The Downfall of Money will tell anew the dramatic story of the hyperinflation that saw the mark--worth 4.2 to the dollar in 1914--plunge, until it traded at over 4trillion to 1 by the autumn of 1923.

The story of the Weimar Republic’s financial crisis clearly resonates today, when the world is again anxious about what money is, what it means, and how we can judge if its value is true. It is a trajectory of events uncomfortably relevant in our own uncertain world.

Frederick Taylor--one of the leading historians of Germany writing today--explores the causes of the crisis and what the collapse meant to ordinary people, and traces its connection to the dark decades that followed. Drawing on a wide range of sources and accessibly presenting vast amounts of research, The Downfall of Moneyis a timely and chilling exploration of a haunting episode in history.

“Excellent . . . By skillfully weaving together economic history with political narrative and drawing on sources from everyday life as well as the inner cabinet of diplomacy, Mr. Taylor tells the history of the Weimar inflation as the life-and-death struggle of the first German democracy . . . This is a dramatic story, well told.” ―Adam Tooze, Wall Street Journal

Different than I expected, but ultimately well worth the read
By MT57
The book is largely a history of Germany from 1918 to 1924, during which the mark depreciated to roughly 1 trillion marks to the dollar. As I began reading, I expected a background on the First World War and of course that is where the book begins. By page 100, however, I was puzzled at the absence of much in the way of economic analysis, given the title of the book. The author was simply telling the story of the first days of postwar government of Germany. There was little about the inflation or hyper inflation that the book was supposed to be about, and I was frustrated. Really, the inflation account does not begin in earnest until the second hundred pages, and the hyper inflation phase from 1922 - 23 does not appear until the next hundred. And, along the way, there is not a great deal of economic analysis explaining the phenomenon, to my surprise. For example, the central banker, Hjetelt Schacht, the central banker through whom the German chapters of "Lords of Finance" are told, does not appear at all until about 80% of the way through the book.

Rather, the author very effectively inserts horrifying anecdotes of the devastation wrought by hyperinflation on the citizens of Germany into a mainly chronological narrative of the political chaos of those few years. Two examples juxtaposed on p. 283 stood out in this respect: "A postal inspector who raided the mail stole $1,717, plus 1,102 Swiss francs, and 114 French francs - sufficient to buy two houses, set up his mistress in a flat (with a piano!) and make a substantial conscience-easing donation to his church." Followed later on the page by: "an elderly Berlin literary man ... withdrew all his savings - 100,000 marks, formerly sufficient to support a modestly comfortable retirement - and purchased all it would buy by that time: one subway ticket. The old gentleman took a last ride around his city, then went back to his apartment and locked himself in. There he died of hunger." Those two anecdotes pretty much tell you all you need to know about hyperinflation - savings disintegrate; foreign currency trumps all, and the criminal does better than the upright man.

Eventually, however, the intent of the author became quite clear. His theme is that the credibility of the currency, the credibility of the government in keeping political order and the credibility of the government in maintaining economic order are all one and the same thing: government credibility. This is not a book about monetary economics. It is a book about political economy. The inflation begins as a political decision - the populace has been deprived for the duration of the war; troops are coming home and demand to be privileged for their service; there is a serious existential risk of a Marxist / Communist revolution on the model of Lenin's Russian takeover only a year earlier; and there is an unhappy fact that has to be faced of the reparations and other terms the Allies will impose for the war. So the decision is taken at the highest levels of the new government (which I assume was motivated to stay in power for some time) to keep order at any cost and the Reichsbank begins printing money for the government to dole out. As well, there are substantial municipal construction projects funded, the workday is cut back and so on. Briefly, this facilitates a boom and unemployment falls to absurd levels (1.7%). Workers win, it seems! But then things get out of control as the productive capacity of the economy is quickly reached; meanwhile, the government must begin making reparations payments but is unwilling to diminish domestic consumption to do so, so it keeps printing money and then people's instincts take over. In 1923, Germany defaults on its obligations to France and France invades the Ruhr valley, taking over a significant chunk of Germany's productive capacity. The government is unable to respond, but again determines to keep paying all the workers who no longer have work to do. Soon, prices are doubling every two days, urban dwellers are riding trains to the rural areas and plundering the farms; prostitution takes the place of marital dowries; money-changers are scapegoated, the educated middle class - civil servants, teachers, etc, - who patriotically lent their savings to the Reich to fund the war are wiped out. Cabinet ministers are assassinated, Hitler's putsch, it's all there.

But it's not all tragic. The banking industry expands several fold, because people are getting paid twice a day! And printing companies, they made out like bandits because the government had to contract out the printing of so much paper money to them. They actually wind up lobbying to keep the hyperinflation going.

But the debacle forces the socialist government to turn over control of the economy to captains of industry and agricultural interests and their representatives, and discipline is finally restored, and the US, flush with gold reserves refinances the short-term reparations burden and for a few brief years, the situation stabilizes. Until the financial crisis of 1929 leads the U.S. lenders to try to call those loans, and Germany can't or won't pay, and the global Depression ensues and Hitler comes to power.

Once I figured out the author's theme that it's all a question of trust and credibility, and there wasn't going to be any analysis of monetary economics beyond that, it was a very worthwhile read, and a nice complement to Lords of Finance which I read at the start of the year. I write this review so that prospective buyers will know what they're buying. It's also just as important an event in economic history as the Great Depression, and one with lessons that still need to be remembered today, as the author discusses in his final chapter.

Downfall of the ruling class - rise of the right wing
By John Bennett
I always open Fred Taylor's books with a sense of great anticipation. His style brings alive what it was like to be there - and this book is no exception. How did one survive - and some thrive - when the mark to the US$ exchange rate went from 4.19 in August 1914 to 6.7 trillion in December 1923? We find out.

Who was to blame? Just about everyone had some role. The Germans actually had a policy of allowing inflation since this wiped out internal debt, much of it owed to the upper middle class, leading to a massive social upheaval and loss of class privilege on an unprecedented level. The Americans refused to even discuss forgiving any of the war debt owed by all of the major European powers, forcing France, one of the largest debtors, to insist on impossibly high reparations by the Germans. Britain supported France but pressed for more realistic repayments. France, after defaults by Germany, invaded and occupied the Ruhr causing Germany even more problems both politically and financially. How could any German government hold all this together?

Internally, few Germans accepted that the war was their fault and most believed the reparations were unjust. Organised labour, flirting dangerously close to Communism, was pitted against anti-Republicans (who controlled the remains of the militia). After years of carting around wheelbarrows full of worthless paper marks, both sides were clamouring for a strong dictatorship to restore order. Enter Corporal Hitler.

Although there is a great deal of information conveyed in the book, Fred Taylor makes it exciting and accessible. It is quite a story and, if like me, you did not know or had forgotten much of the detail, you have a treat in store. It is commonplace to blame the Treaty of Versailles for the Second World War, but, like most things, it was a lot more complex than that. This book reveals all.

Thoroughly recommended.

A History of Weimar Through the Lens of Money
By David Shulman
Frederick Taylor is a historian, not an economist. In "The Downfall of Money" he writes a history of Germany from 1914 to 1925 through the lens of the great inflation that befell that country. For example the German Mark falls from 4.2 to the dollar in August 1914 to nearly 7 trillion to the dollar by the end of 1923. He tells the story of how an ordinary wartime inflation which occurred in all of the major combatants turned into a hyperinflation in the postwar era as Germany was weighed down by reparations payments along with a social democratic imperative to fund the welfare state.

He tells the story as to how the inflation impacted various stratas of society with big winners and big losers. The losers were well represented in the German middle-class who patriotically bought war bonds that were to become worthless and for many of them their wages failed to keep up with the inflation. The winners were farmers who held real assets and saw their debts erased by inflation along with the great industrialists who witnessed a stock market boom and the elimination of corporate indebtedness. By the end of the inflation the entire domestic debt of Germany was eliminated. To be sure the external debt was enormous.

Along the way we witness the rise of the Freikorps, the killing of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht and the assasination of Walter Rathenau, a Jewish industrialist who served as foreign minister. There is also a cameo appearance of a demobilized corporal who would one day rule all of Germany.

Harris certainly has a feel for the history of the period. However, I only wish he would have integrated charts and tables in the text in order to get a better understanding of what was going on in the macroeconomy. Further he should have spent more time discussing the stabilization program that came in 1924 that broke the inflation and of its consequences. Nevertheless the book is well worth the read.

Where the Sidewalk Ends: Poems and Drawings, by Shel Silverstein

Where the Sidewalk Ends turns forty! Celebrate with this anniversary edition that features an eye-catching commemorative red sticker. This classic poetry collection, which is both outrageously funny and profound, has been the most beloved of Shel Silverstein's poetry books for generations.

Where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. There you'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist.

Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is one of Parent & Child magazine's 100 Greatest Books for Kids. School Library Journal said, "Silverstein has an excellent sense of rhythm and rhyme and a good ear for alliteration and assonance that make these poems a pleasure to read aloud."

Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. In 1964, Shel's creativity continued to flourish as four more books were published in the same year—Don't Bump the Glump!, A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, and the beloved classic The Giving Tree. Later he continued to build his remarkable body of work with Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and Runny Babbit.

Amazon.com Review
Shel Silverstein shook the staid world of children's poetry in 1974 with the publication of this collection, and things haven't been the same since. More than four and a half million copies of Where the Sidewalk Ends have been sold, making it the bestselling children's poetry book ever. With this and his other poetry collections (A Light in the Attic and Falling Up), Silverstein reveals his genius for reaching kids with silly words and simple pen-and-ink drawings. What child can resist a poem called "Dancing Pants" or "The Dirtiest Man in the World"? Each of the 130 poems is funny in a different way, or touching ... or both. Some approach naughtiness or are a bit disgusting to squeamish grown-ups, but that's exactly what kids like best about Silverstein's work. Jim Trelease, author of The New Read-Aloud Handbook, calls this book "without question, the best-loved collection of poetry for children." (Ages 4 to 10)

Review
"A zesty collection of humorous light verse."-- "SLJ.""An ideal book for teachers to have handy . . . If you want to ungloom your day, start Where the Sidewalk Ends." -- "Reading Teacher."

Need a short trip away from reality?
By Love Books
I'm embarrassed to say that I had heard of author Shel Silverstein and had also heard of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" BUT had never picked up a copy and read it. A friend recently quoted from the book which stirred my curiosity as I'm always on the lookout for great books for my 8 year old great niece. I bought the book based on what my friend said as well as reviews posted on Amazon.com. I always read the books I get for my G niece before giving them to her as I so enjoy kids and young adults literature as well as what I normally read. I'm half way through "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and already know that I will be buying more of Mr. Silverstein's books for my G niece. The poems are creative and humorous with the drawings completing the "story". I know my niece will enjoy the book and probably her parents too! This is the type of book to be read again and again whenever you need a short trip away from reality.

Sent as a gift
By P. S. Land
Children in the U.S. are SO lucky to have books at their fingertips. That is not the case in other countries.

Last year, I sent my friends new son a few books for his first birthday. I had no idea the books I sent were his very FIRST ONES! Apparently, literature is SO taxed, it is not easily available. I take children's books for granted. I think we all do.

Shel Silverstein brings back wonderful memories from my daughter's childhood and fortunately, she has passed on her love of reading to her own two daughters. I could not imagine childhood without certain books and I had to send "Where the Sidewalk Ends" to my friends for Christmas. This book is one that they can all enjoy (and it may be a bright spot in learning English for their wonderful little boy!).

I wish I could send more books to them. And I will. Over time.

Wonderful Goodnight Story Book!
By Missy K.
This is a great book that I truly believe all kids will cherish. It's fun to read to them, and the jokes are silly enough that adults will laugh too. Reminds you of the child within. Shel Silverstein really hit kids books out of the park. He was a home run winner! This is as essential a book to kids as his other book The Giving Tree, although it's full of small poems for bed time and much lighter at heart. Definitely recommend this author for kids.

Inventing Iron Man: The Possibility of a Human Machine, by E. Paul Zehr

Tony Stark has been battling bad guys and protecting innocent civilians since he first donned his mechanized armor in the 1963 debut of Iron Man in Marvel Comics. Over the years, Stark's suit has allowed him to smash through walls, fly through the air like a human jet, control a bewildering array of weaponry by thought, and perform an uncountable number of other fantastic feats. The man who showed us all what it would take to become Batman probes whether science -- and humankind -- is up to the task of inventing a real-life Iron Man.

E. Paul Zehr physically deconstructs Iron Man to find out how we could use modern-day technology to create a suit of armor similar to the one Stark made. Applying scientific principles and an incredibly creative mind to the question, Zehr looks at how Iron Man's suit allows Stark to become a superhero. He discusses the mind-boggling and body-straining feats Iron Man performed to defeat villains like Crimson Dynamo, Iron Monger, and Whiplash and how such acts would play out in the real world. Zehr finds that science is nearing the point where a suit like Iron Man's could be made. But superherodom is not just about technology, and Zehr also discusses our own physical limitations and asks whether or not an extremely well-conditioned person could use Iron Man's armor and do what he does.

A scientifically sound look at brain-machine interfaces and the outer limits where neuroscience and neural plasticity meet, Inventing Iron Man is a fun, direct, and parallel comparison of comic book science fiction with modern science. If you've ever wondered whether you have what it takes to be the ultimate human-machine hero, then this book is for you.

From WhatIsTechnoAgain.com Blog
By Stephanie
A couple of years ago, I read and reviewed a book called Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero. Unlike many other superhero-meets-something topics (usually that "something" is philosophy related), this one interested me on two fundamental levels: it talked about Batman from the appreciative standpoint of specific comic book issues, and it showed me with rock hard, scientific proof which aspects of my favorite caped crusader were possible to achieve by way of body and mind and which were not.

Now the author of that book is back with another investigation into the possible and impossible, and this time he's adding another layer to the inquiry: human and machine. E. Paul Zehr, who so kindly provided me a review copy of his latest work (on sale October 1), has chosen Iron Man as his sophomore course of study, and he follows through with as much curiosity and passion as his first. Inventing Iron Man: The Possibility of a Human Machine uses Tony Stark's original and remodeled suits as a launch point to answer countless questions about man and his capability to connect with complicated machines and to investigate how close to current technology those wondrous armors are.

The questions lead the reader down paths of neuroscience and kinesiology (the study of human movement) to possibilities of flight, the myth of multi-tasking, the effects of substance abuse, the damage sustained by prolonged biological interface with a machine, to the long-lasting effects of subjecting the human body to a second exoskeleton that does all the major work for you. As with Becoming Batman, the most fascinating parts of Inventing Iron Man are the avenues of discussion most comic book fans never consider: like how wearing the Iron Man suit would expose Tony to the same gravitational issues that astronauts face when they return to Earth, or what realistic explanation could be offered in replacement of Stark's fictional origin story.

Like a true costumed hero, Zehr masks learning in the guise of pop culture enthusiasm--the language and life blood of comic book nerds. Readers will forget they're being taught real-world information and that at the book's center--and Iron Man's heart--is the same science and technology they were exposed to in school. The techno-speak weighs down the occasional chapter, but most of the time the author has a good handle on making the language accessible and easily understood. I wish Zehr had written all my biology textbooks.

Inventing Iron Man: The Possibility of a Human Machine is a perfect source to learn about the history of Iron Man and the strength and limits of the human body and brain. If you're already a genius-level Iron Man fan, then you're bound to discover a new facet of your beloved hero. Take it from a girl who knows her Batman ever better now than before.

Is Our Fantasy A Possible Reality? It Just Might Be!
By Shawn Kovacich
This was really a quite fascinating book that takes a look at the fantasy of the Marvel Comic Books superhero "Ironman" and asks the question, "Is this really possible?" And the answer to that question just may very well surprise you.

The author really puts a lot of thought into this question and gives scientific proof of what is and what is not possible. Just like he did in his previous work, Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero, which I also highly recommend that you read.

I realize that this review is rather brief, but there really isn't a whole lot more that I can add after reading some of the earlier reviews.

Iron mana for the curious
By Robert Frost
One of the most prevalent themes of speculative fiction is the examination of the idea of improving a human through the use of technology. There are a myriad of versions, whether it be through bionic implants, cyborgs, or full up androids housing human minds, but the most successful execution of the idea is likely the story of Iron Man. Iron Man was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby of Marvel Comics, in 1963. He's appeared in more than a 1000 comic books, several animated series, and two feature films.

To have such success and longevity, a character has to maintain their humanity so that the audience can identify with them. Iron Man is able to do this better than other characters for two reasons - first, because the human, Tony Stark, can easily be separated from the machine and second, because Tony Stark is a very human character - a mesh of exaggerated flaws and charm.
When the audience attempts to identify with the character they inevitable ask themselves, could I do that? Could I (assuming I was a genius billionaire) become Iron Man? In the new book Inventing Iron Man: The Possibility of a Human Machine, E.Paul Zehr attempts to answer that question from the perspective of someone that is both a professor of neuroscience and kinesiology and a comic book geek.

This is the second time Dr. Zehr has examined, via a book, such a question. A few years ago he wrote a book called Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero. It too, incidentally, is a great book.

Imagine, for a moment, the challenges of creating and being Iron Man. What are the questions you would ask? This is how Zehr attacks the problem. Can a machine emulate the actions of a human? Can a human interface with such a machine? Can a human inhabit such a machine? How would using it impact the body? How long could one be Iron Man?

This is a book written for the curious. Don't expect short simple yes or no answers. This is a book that leaves the path to explore tangents that bring a greater understanding of the variables involved. Zehr draws on his own expertise but also brings in experts in diverse areas that serve as parallels to the idea of Iron Man. The Iron Man costume would have to provide the life support of a NASA EVA spacesuit, the protection of an army bomb disposal team's protective suit, the flying capabilities of Yves Rossy's Jet-man wing, and the dexterous control of NASA's Robonaut. It would also have to interface with the brain like the medical prosthetics used to help paralyzed persons.

The curious person, like Zehr, can't just stop there with the technical possibilities, but has to look at the human perspective. How much training would it take to control the suit? How much concentration to5 operate it? What would happen to the body as it experienced the stresses that Iron Man endures every day.

To maintain a connection between the reality that is being examined and the original source character in the comic books and films, scattered throughout the book are quotations and illustrations from the comics to explain how the comics have addressed the same questions. Sixty-one different comics are cited throughout the book.

I'm an engineer and an instructor, so I look at any technical discussion from two perspectives: Is it technically correct? and is it being described in a way that is understandable to the audience? Inventing Iron Man succeeds on both counts. It is a fast and fascinating read. I read the 180 page book in a single sitting.

Should be required reading
By William F. Thomas
If you want to start a business, if you are a manager, or if you want to be a success in anything, this should be required reading.

"If your only goals are to be successful in business and to make a lot of money, you will grow to be a bitter old man or woman....I have always believed that you can run a company to obtain selfish goals by using intimidating management techniques only for a certain period of time. Sooner or later, the people who work for you will figure you out. They will figure you out, and either try to cheat you back or quit. In either case, you reach a point of zero growth, or possibly bankruptcy...Somewhere along the way, American business developed the idea that the job of a manager is to make people work. The can be a problem, because people don't like to be made to do anything. Of course, there must be some supervision of less experienced people by those more experienced. But, in some businesses, people are valued less than the office furniture....You show people how they can succeed, help them to achieve personal success, and your own success and the success of your company is assured...."

Art isn't just talking out of his hat. He did it. This is how he did it. Seriously, SERIOUSLY, you need to read this book!

Art Williams Is a GREAT Mentor
By Alisonlight
This book is about making the salesman first in the sales structure. That the sales guy or lady is the single most important factor in any company. Without sales we have no ability to move the products we supply, and it is a wise leader that always promotes!

Building people is a rare commodity in todays markets, but A. L. Williams takes building people a step farther. People are important. From the families a business serves, to the business owner's child's teacher, to the mailman, to the new girl behind the desk. Everyone has a world of abilities and assets to bring to the table.

Awesome book if YOU want to make a difference.

Great Book for Health Researchers
By MM
I am surprised that nobody has reviewed this book before me. This book was required for a Statistics class I took. I had a great time reading this book and I learned a lot. The authors explain the statistical concepts using graphics, which is very helpful if one does not have lot of mathematical background. The book is arranged in a systematic manner that makes it easier to understand the statistical procedure to be used depending upon the type of situation. The flowcharts provided in the book really helps in this matter. The book is written in a easy-to-understand language that makes the topics interesting. The outputs from SAS software are included to explain how the analysis is done using computer. Its a great book for a person new to the health-research and want to understand the statistical procedures used in this field.
