About the Author

Andrew Baum was appointed Professor of Land Management at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, in 1989 and is now Professor of Real Estate Investment at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge.

Nick Nunnington is Head of Business Development, specialising in corporate real estate and property asset management at Sheffield Hallam University.

David Mackmin is a chartered surveyor and Prefessor of Real Estate at Sheffield Hallam University.

English Pound notation is great if your working in England

I ordered the book as a guide for refreshing some equations and methods in the income approach that I use for reports. The book is very comprehensive and useful ....except that it is noted in the Pound system which is distracting when read.

Great Book

Out of any guitar teaching books I own, this one is my favorite. It is a larger type book with big plastic loop bindings. This makes open placement much easier. The music scales or graphics are very easy to read and the book is presented in a logical manner. This book also comes with 3 CD's which are named Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3. Very easy to use and follow. 5 stars.

After doing some reaserch on good guitar books I found this one and bought it. I've been playing the guitar on and off for about 6 years but never really took the time to learn the craft and the instrument I just looked for the tab of my favorite songs and played that. But now after years of frustration and not really knowing how to play I've decided to buy a couple of books (this one, music theory for guitarist and fretboard mastery) and start really learning how to play the guitar. Even tho as a beginner I took some lessons with 3 different teachers, this book has taught me more than all of them combined. This book is awsome for any guitarist looking to learn the fundamentals and basics. I belive it's very important to have a good base of knowledge as a musician to be able to acomplish anything you want in music. This book gives you that and more!

It may not be for everyone but it is for me

After spending a good amount of money on one-on-one guitar lesson with professional guitarists, I've gotten nowhere. It's none of any of my former teachers' fault. It's just being 47 years old with a full-time job and and another full-time job raising a family with 3 young kids leave me with little time and energy for little else for myself, and that made it more challenging to learn how to play a musical instrument. I recently got this book and its CD's, after helping my oldest daughter with her viola practices using a CD to accompany her playing along with a book. All I can say is that it was at $15 well-spent. One thing I must say though - if you don't want to practice, then no matter how much you spend, it ain't gonna help you learn or play better. The accompaniments on the CD's will make you sound better than you can really play, and that will motivate you to practice even more. Honestly, it does make me want to "grab my guitar and play it all night long."

If you love audiobooks, you MUST check this out!

This audiobook has so much more than I would have first thought. There is such variety in general in content that was thought provoking as well as inspiring and it is presented in a way that, at least for me, I was inspired and encouraged to do more and to be more. This audio book was something that let me think deeper about my own journey as well as about my relationships with others. I also was able to think about the future and where I want to see myself going personally and professionally. This was the perfect audiobook for me at this point in my life as I am reassessing my priorities and seeing where I want to focus next. If you love audiobooks, you MUST check this out!

Great (Though Not As Compelling as What I Know For Sure)

It's been almost a year since I listened to and loved Oprah Winfrey's What I Know For Sure. So having loved that audiobook and having been a longtime subscriber to O Magazine, I was thrilled when the latest audiobook from the Oprah empire found its way in my mailbox.

I admit, it took me quite so time to sit down and listen to this audiobook because I had a feeling it wouldn't live up to my expectations. And...well, there are two sides to this coin. One on side, I really enjoyed the stories being told here, the lessons being learned here, and so on. There are so many different journeys from so many diverse lives in these stories about loss and survival, being vulnerable and accepting help, taking chances and embracing the unknown. Saying yes. I really appreciate the fact that some of the most touching life lessons from O Magazine contributors can be found in one place. That in itself is something to be very happy about.

What's great about this is that it's more reflection, more insight and inspiration than it is a traditional self help book filled with direction and advice and facts and not a whole lot of substance or depth. So, I really liked the structure of the essays. They were each so distinct and each left their mark and it never felt preachy. I loved how most of these essays are simply about how these people found happiness, what the turning point was for them in their search for joy. It's quite something to see the turning points in other people's lives. The human experience is something else. In all of this, there was an overall theme of optimism and joy and open arms and gratitude. An overall sense of peace. Even in all of the mess that life throws at us. I loved that overall theme of relinquishing control and enjoying the adventures of life or learning to appreciate and shape and extend our place in this world. I especially loved "Book Lust" by Pamela Erens and "Stop Whining" by Roxane Gay.

Now on the other side, I didn't quite connect with the audiobook as much as I had hoped. Narrated by five people, I only found two of the voices to be extremely compelling, two to at least hold my attention, and one to be quite frankly...boring. So if you're on a road trip and looking for a more serene listening experience, this is perfect. Go with the audiobook format and sit with this for three hours. Otherwise, I think this is much better suited consuming as a coffee table book and I'll stick to The Moth for more insight and inspiration through the spoken word. But because I am such a fan of the Oprah empire, you know I am definitely looking forward to whatever is released next!

With The Witcher: Volume 2 we have a contained and complete story separate from volume 1; the previous book does not need to be read first in order to enjoy Fox Children. Gamers looking to expand the world beyond The Wild Hunt and Assassins of Kings will find familiar territory and enjoy the story. Those new to the world of the Witcher can also begin with Fox Children since it is a standalone and can serve as a decent introduction to the character. Both the game designer and writer Tobin collaborated and note that the game has many elements drawn from comic/graphic novel conventions and therefore this is a very accessible piece appealing to a wide audience.

Story: The Witcher joins with a dwarf Adaggio to protect a ship's crew attempting to rescue a wealthy Elf's kidnapped daughter. But the task is not so easily accomplished and it will take all of the Witcher's talents and skills in order to survive the illusions and traps set by a vengeful vulpess.

The story is very straightforward but definitely captures the dialogue and personalities from the games (more so than the novels, in which the speech patterns (and often humor) are less defined). Although the author does attempt to bring in some moral complexities, the simplistic nature of the story does result in a pat solution/ending. Perhaps that was the most disappointing aspect of Fox Children since so many of the quests/plots in Witcher involve ambivalence and nuance. There's a lot of padding in the middle that devolved to 'fight monster x then fight monster y' that perhaps pandered a bit too much to the gamers without bringing more to the storyline.

The art is serviceable and the characters look the part. There were some really ugly drawings in there, however, where faces were distorted or simply colored in without any features. The Witcher, especially, ended up being very nebulously defined, often viewed either extreme close up (e.g., cat-like eyeballs) or long shot pullbacks where he's pretty much a lump with a white ponytail. Especially those who recently played the game and have the incredible animation still in their memory might be a bit disappointed as I was by the illustration work on the Witcher himself. That said, the rest of the art was solid and told the story well.

While this is a newbie-friendly self contained story, I did find it a bit bloated and lacking the complexity of a Witcher game subplot. Certainly, the author captured the curt, 'dropped article' dialogue and grounded logic/wisdom of Geralt. As well, the misogynistic "women are insane and especially the ones I'm involved with" is intact here. The author and illustrator know the Witch lore, characters, novels, and games well and have done a decent job of staying true to their source material. And yet, the story does exactly what the Witcher games did not: it gives a fairly straightforward, 'kill the monsters' quest with a happy ending. That's a shame since the Witcher games and novels are about not having pat answers to life's difficulties thrown at Geralt - whose victories are Pyrrhic more often than not.

In all, I am glad I bought it. The physical, soft cover book is beautifully presented and includes artwork from the game as well as covers from the comics. The printing is crisp and the colors rich. But yes, I did hope for more.

Amiri Baraka (1934-2014) has authored over 40 books of essays, poems, drama, and music history and criticism. An American poet icon and revolutionary political activist, he has recited poetry and lectured on cultural and political issues extensively in the USA, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe.

At least someone's honest about who really blew up America

People like to separate out people like Amiri Baraka as a "Black radical" yet what happened on 9/11 happened to everyone and everyone needs to be just as angry over who was behind it--those who occupy the US and most of the world. Baraka lost his poet laureate title over this truthful poem, by those who occupy this country, so it's no surprise to anyone who's clued in on this horrific situation that that is exactly what happens when you reveal the truth. The poem is brilliant and immensely courageous. We don't make true heroes of the people like this anymore.

speaking truth to power can get you dismissed

The late author of the title poem (RIP) was removed as Poet Laureate of New Jersey because some people object when the brave speak truth to power. So much for freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of opinion, freedom in any form that offends the easily offended. Only Death could silence this man, but his words continue to be read.

It's worth reading

I found out about the poem, Somebody Blew up America, while watching some September 11th film. I was interested. And the way the poem was portrayed, I thought that Baraka was blaming the Jews for the attacks. I was shocked (but interested) that someone would be so bold because so many people seem reluctant to address the many inconsistencies of September 11th. To have a Poet Laureate talking about these issues is refreshing because he could use his celebrity to talk only of love lost. Instead he is making us uncomfortable with the many problems that plague our society. That is what art used to be about.

The book is really more a booklet. It can be finished in a day, perhaps an hour. But I will come back to these poems again and again to see what else I can gain from them. The introduction puts Baraka's poems into a context that is neglected in the media reports that merely want to incite acrimony. One poem talks of reparations for all of the people that have had their hopes taken from them. I know that topic is a bit out of fashion with mainstream media, but Baraka's poem cuts to the feeling that many Afro-Americans have about the topic.

We are entering this time when you can't say certain things and everyone is supposed to be politically correct, so its easily to paint an Amiri Baraka as a leftist radical racist. I think there is more to this man and this book is a brief introduction to that mind.
