Great Book, but examples could use some work

This book is a great source of information for those looking to learn or review the US tax code for individuals. The text includes various rate tables, charts, and tax forms that are helpful in quickly learning & reviewing information.

However, I found that while using this book during study sessions examples would be difficult to understand if I did not read the full chapter. The examples use the initial "story" created at the beginning of the chapter and each example builds on this story. I would look at Example 11 for a quick reference and get bogged down in numbers that were explained in previous examples.

This is one of the best accounting textbooks I've had. Tax accounting can be a boring subject for those who aren't going into Tax, such as myself (I'm focusing on Auditing and Forensic acconuting), and this made the subject a lot easier to swallow.

About the Author

Buie Harwood, FIDEC, Honorary FASID, Certified Interior Designer in Virginia; Professor Emeritus and past Department Chair, Department of Interior Design, School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University (for programs in Richmond and Doha, Qater). Ms. Harwood has held officership and committee responsibilities in the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER; now called the Council for Interior Design Accreditation/CIDA). Among her many honors, she is an IDEC Fellow, received the first ASID Educator of Distinction Award in 2003, and is listed in Who's Who in Interior Design, the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, and Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She has received numerous grants, published articles, and implemented research projects related to her historic research and the interior design career path. She is co-author (with B. May and C. Sherman) of Architecture and Interior Design, through the 18th century: An Integrated History, which won the prestigious ASID Education Foundation/Joel Polsky award in 2002, and their second volume, Architecture and Interior Design, from the 19th century: An Integrated History which was published in June 2008. Her book, Decorating Texas: Decorative Painting in the Lone Star State from the 1850s to the 1950s, won awards from the American Association of State and Local History and the San Antonio Conservation Society. She has studied in the Victorian Society Summer Schools at both Rhode Island and England.

 

Bridget May, Ph.D, IDEC, ASID; Professor and former Chair of Interior Design, School of Arts and Sciences, Marymount University. Dr. May has held office and committee responsibilities in the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), and been active in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Her many honors include a Benno M. Forman Fellowship for Research in American Material Culture at Winterthur Museum and Library and a one semester sabbatical at Marymount University. She has been listed in Who's Who in Interior Design and Who's Who in American Women. She has had many presentations, publications, and grants related to historic interiors, including one for a furnishings plan for a National Trust Historic Preservation house as well as a 2008 IDEC Special Projects Grant for a design history symposium (with John Turpin). She is co-author (with B. Harwood and C. Sherman) of Architecture and Interior Design, through the 18th century: An Integrated History, which won the prestigious ASID Education Foundation/Joel Polsky award in 2002, and their second volume, Architecture and Interior Design, from the 19th century: An Integrated History which was published in June 2008. She has studied at the Victorian Society Summer School in Rhode Island and at the Winterthur Summer Institute in Delaware.

 

Curt Sherman, FIDEC, ASID; Professor Emeritus, Department of Art and Design, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Winthrop University. May) of Architecture and Interior Design, through the 18th century: An Integrated History, which won the prestigious ASID Education Foundation/Joel Polsky award in 2002, and their second volume, Architecture and Interior Design, from the 19th century: An Integrated History which was published in June 2008. He has also worked on several historic interiors projects and studied at the Attingham Summer School in England as well as programs sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Smithsonian Institute.

Service, price, and delivery are great, book is weak.

The book was delivered on time, and the service was great, but the book itself has some issues.

The book often concentrates more on exterior architectural styles than interior design, or even interior architecture for that matter. I had made a joke at the beginning of the semester about how architecture students should take an interior design course, because we study exteriors so much more than interiors. The joke was that "Every architecture book I've ever had has photos of Palladio's Villa Rotunda, but I've never seen a photo of the interior. Well, you can throw this book in the same pile, because we have photos of the Villa Rotunda, but none from the inside.

There are mistakes, which is off-putting. On page 49, there is a labeled diagram of the Ionic Order. Both of the mouldings labelled "cyma reversa" are cyma rectas. It wouldn't be a big deal, but they're defined on the very next page (A cyma reversa is a concave moulding with a convex moulding above it, and a cyma recta is a convex moulding with a concave moulding above it.)

On page 65, there is a reconstruction of the Roman Forum. The view is from the center of the forum, looking towards the Capitoline hill. It's labelled "Forum, Basilica, and Market of Trajan." Not only are the markets of Trajan not in the picture, they're actually quite far away from the center of the Roman Forum. The markets of Trajan are on the other side of the imperial fora, on the northern end of the Forum of Trajan. Trajan's markets are really really not in the illustration.

There are lots of little sloppy mistakes in the book, and the notes and powerpoints that come with the book to be used in the class are redundant, ambiguous, and sometimes contradictory.

I'd like to reiterate, the seller is great. And the price for the book was really good too. I always check a variety of sites' prices before ordering. The book is somewhat weak though.

This is a decent textbook, fairly well-written and logical. Architecture and Interior Design across the centuries is a huge topic, so it's tough to criticize. But in some chapters, the wording seems as if it could be interchangeable when describing hallmarks of style. If you're purchasing this textbook for a required course, enjoy it; if for your own resource, look a little further.

Dry with bad photography

I needed this book for class. It is informative, but very dry. Some images are beautiful and crystal clear and some are really poor quality and pixelated. Just look at the cover images, the one on the left is perfect and the right one is super fuzzy.

This is a must have for the ninja library.

Why?

Many ninja books spend the first few chapters telling you about the history of the ninja and the Ryu and the things that a ninja was classically trained in. While that is good information - this book doesn't waste your time repeating what everyone else tells you about.

This book was useful to me in three ways.
1. It had an emphasis on the spiritual and personal development of ninjutsu. This is a subject sorely lacking in all martial arts books - especially in Ninjutsu because its not a straight cross over to Zen Buddhism... Plus its put in plain english, in modern application and terms, so you're not left guessing how to interpret the instruction.

2. This book debunks the stretching mythos and gives some good advice on how to improve flexibility and the why's and hows of why one method works over the other. It was good to see a book that was not afraid to go away from what everyone else says and stand out.

3. This is a book - so when a physical technique is described its hard to get the sense of how to do it. This book goes to great length to describe a technique in detail and then show you the pictures. It also tells you what to look out for when you are performing the said technique.

This book is written from a Bujinkan perspective but is useful for any Ninjutsu practitioner. This is a book that I would recommend to add to your collection! A must read.

Wonderful insight about seed sowing

This is an awesome book. I first watched Jesse Duplantis DVD on why isn't my giving working which promoted me to want to know more about seed sowing. After reading this book I received direction on seed time and harvest. Great book

He knows his anatomy

[[VIDEOID:38608351]]Apes and Babes should be the first art book of Frank Cho feature more of his action and superhero comic art. It's a 144-page hardcover with a dust jacket.

The book features comic covers he has drawn for Marvel, Jungle Girl, Liberty Meadows and Mars. I'm not sure what Mars is but it's something like Conan, Xena, Frank Frazetta kind of art. For many of the illustrations, he has included the pencil line art version so you can see the before and after. Even though the subject is similar, the feel of the art is very different when colours are added on.

The most impressive part about is art book is probably his knowledge of anatomy. Even though the characters might still be a bit stylised, the anatomy adds a more realistic dimensionality to the character designs. I like the way he uses extremely thin lines to portray muscle contours. The colouring -- in this case probably called lighting -- is fantastic.

This book is recommended to superhero art collectors and Frank Cho fans.

Apes and Babes: The Art Of Frank Cho Book 1

Overall this is a nice book. If you can't afford or find, the Mars Maidens, Jungle Queens, or the Sketches and Scribbles books, this has a nice sampling of the works from those. The book is from Image, and like the Liberty Meadows books, it's a nice quality hard cover with bright pages. And it's also the same size as previous LM books. Under the dust jacket, the book itself is dark green with a shiny silver skull surrounded by the name of book in the same color. Don't stare too long kids.

I like the way on most of the work, you get a comp sketch, with loose or tight pencils, that precedes the finished work. And the piece will encompass the full page on the left, then the full page on the right. So that you can compare and see what compositional changes were made before going to print. On some pages, there are the finished inks preceding the final.

For about the first half of the book, it's mostly marvel stuff he has done recently. Then the jungle section is basically that, apes and babes, with a few of his older pieces you can see in the Sketches and Scribbles books. Followed by some Brandy and friends. And then ends with the Mars section. Some Conan, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, and 4 armed apes. It's a nice selection of images, new and from books mentioned previously.

If you're new to Cho, or have been following his work, it's worth saving your lunch money for. I don't think you'll be disappointed. With a strong foundation in anatomy, and super clean inks, he fits into that Frazetta, Suydam genre.

good book with a few reservations

The selection of art is pretty extensive for a book of this type. Almost half of it hasn't seen the inside of any of his previous art books. Unfortunately most it is familiar because it's cover art that helped to make him famous in the world of American comic books. There are some reproductions of his paintings that have lost their intensity, they're a little washed out looking.
Besides these problems this is a nice book. The people who have been buying up his many books will be happy to see the work that hasn't been in previous books. For those holding out, this is as good as they're likely to get.
This is 144 pages of fun. It's that simple. Frank Cho is a surprising talent in today's American comic book market. This book illustrates why knowing anatomy and not relying on distinctive but over-stylized, gimmick laden art is not old fashioned. Frank knows his stuff.

About the Author
Jack Erjavec has become a fixture in the automotive textbook publishing world. He has decades of experience as a technician, educator, author, and editor, and has authored or co-authored more than 30 automotive textbooks and training manuals. Erjavec holds a master's degree in vocational and technical education from Ohio State University, and he spent twenty years at Columbus State Community College as an instructor and administrator. A long-time affiliate of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers, he also served as executive vice-president for the organization and spent several years on its board of directors. Erjavec is also associated with ATMC, SAE, ASA, ATRA, AERA, and other automotive professional associations.

Rob Thompson has been teaching high school automotive technology since 1995. His teaching career began in 1994 as an adjunct faculty member at Columbus State Community College. Since 2007, Thompson has worked on numerous projects for Cengage Learning and is the author of AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE & LIGHT REPAIR. He currently serves as vice-president and president-elect of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers.

Of moderate value for actual auto repair.

I bought the 3rd edition, as it best fits my own vehicles. I found several errors that the proof readers missed. I also found it a bit redundant to explain what a gasket is for each component that might use a gasket. Overall, this appears to be a required text for some, but it is a lightweight for automotive repair and certainly does not justify the high price of the newer versions. At a reasonable price, it offers an overview of vehicle repair, and if accompanied by an actual repair manual, such as Motors or Chiltons, it would be OK. As an actual automotive engineer with years of engine development experience, I was disappointed with it. The author apparently takes articles from various companies web sights or literature, and puts in his books. I don't get the feeling that the author actually has any automotive experience.

This book is GREAT! There are tons of stories about gullible people and ripoffs that will knock you side ways. Nash's continual use of the word sucker is also amusing. A big book stuffed full of many details. A good research book for writers i would suggest.

I am using excerpts of this book for my AP Literature class and my students find it very engaging. I purchased this because i owned (and loved) the poetry version of this book.

Must have for anyone interested in American poetry from the last 50 years

I have a love hate relationship involving this book. I LOVE this book it is one of the only places you can find D.A. Levy's poems. I HATE myself because I have lost it 3 times and I am now on my fourth copy. But this book is great enough where I will buy 4 copies ($65.88) just so i can not be long with out it. It is in my backpack it is on my nightstand. This has given me great perspective within my own writing. Though it could use some more super recent poets (Def jam and some more recent slammers) but over all it is one of the most influential books in my life
