About the Author
Burke Johnson is a professor in the Professional Studies Department at the University of South Alabama. His PhD is from the REMS (research, evaluation, measurement, and statistics) program in the College of Education at the University of Georgia. He also has graduate degrees in psychology, sociology, and public administration, which have provided him with a multidisciplinary perspective on research methodology. He was guest editor for a special issue of Research in the Schools focusing on mixed research (available online at www.msera.org/rits_131.htm) and completed a similar guest editorship for the American Behavioral Scientist. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. Burke is first author of Educational Research: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Approaches (Sage, 2014, 5th edition); second author of Research Methods, Design, and Analysis (Pearson, 2014, 12th edition); coeditor (with Sharlene Hesse-Biber) of The Oxford Handbook of Multimethod and Mixed Methods Research Inquiry (2015); coeditor (with Paul Vogt) of Correlation and Regression Analysis (2012); and associate editor of The SAGE Glossary of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (2009).
Larry Christensen (PhD University of Southern Mississippi) is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of South Alabama. Larry is the author of several successful textbooks and has published more than 60 journal articles.

Outstanding Research Methods Book

As a beginning graduate student, I first opened Educational research: Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods in the college bookstore. As I thumbed through the pages, the book fell open to a heading in the Preface titled Organization of the Book. There, laid out in succinct language, was the recipe for conducting a research project. Reading through six brief paragraphs describing the six sections of the book opened my understanding and sparked my interest in research before I reached the checkout line at the bookstore. I expected that this book would have a big impact on my intellectual development as a research practitioner. Four years later as a PhD student, I can tell you that my expectation has been fulfilled. I liked the second edition so much that I also bought the third edition. This book offers the complete package for learning about research. Here are few reasons (among many) why I value it:
1. The organization of the book makes it not only very useful as a textbook, but also as a handbook for conducting a research project. Given that Part 1 is an introduction to the research process, it is one of the most valuable sections in the book in that it not only facilitates the formation of a research schema for the beginning researcher; it provides an excellent recapitulation of the scientific approach to knowledge generation for the infrequent researcher who needs a refresher prior to engaging in a new project.
2. Key terms associated with the field of educational research are clearly defined in the text and brief definitions are included in the margins adjacent to the text where they are discussed. This feature is very useful for study and review of key concepts.
3. The book has a strong practitioner focus. Found throughout the book are well designed checklists, tables, and flowcharts that augment the research methods and processes explained in the text. "How to" chapters in the book explain how to write a research proposal, how to collect data, how to construct a questionnaire, how to analyze data, and how to write a research report.
4. The book includes an excellent companion website that has lectures, concept maps, journal articles, and a lot more. Here is a link to the companion website: [...]
This is a great book! The chapter on how to construct a questionnaire alone is worth the price of the book. If you're planning on doing educational research or research in the social sciences, I strongly recommend it. It has been invaluable to me as a masters student and as a doctoral student. This work is more than a textbook. It is a handbook that should be kept within arm's reach of anyone conducting educational research.
